First time playing the newest version is also the first time the game has just frozen on me

Now that the update has happened is this the best the game is expected to run? Will there be improvements in that sort of department? Also, is it likely the game will run slower after more features are implemented like NPCs or fire?

The letter made it sound like it would be sometimes this week, is that still true? I even thought it was supposed to be today.
