The final variant of T-28 in 1940 and 1941, was equipped with conical turret to increase armor protection. About twelve were produced. When Germany started Operation Barbarossa, most of T-28s were destroyed in first two months, mostly abandoned after mechanical breakdown. After this, T-28 became a rarity to be seen on the battlefield, thought they were seen during defense of Leningrad and Moscow.
T-28 Model 1940 had the same conical turret like late-production T-35. The equipment and armament was the same like in previous model, also 76mm gun and two machine gun turrets, plus two more machine guns in the main turret (one coaxial, one on back).
