An aspiring developer, I wish to make my own mod. I've learned the basics of map making for Source Engine and I am starting to learn C++ for coding.

VVVVVV

Game review

Retro-graphics vis a vis Commodore 64, an epic soundtrack, and extremely well-designed levels. Absolutely superb. I have played this game through at least 10 times. I have the soundtrack, because those tunes kept getting stuck in my head. Ridiculously fun, but at the same time, particularly rage inducing.

Sven Co-op

Mod review

Who knew co-op could be this good? With a large amount of community-made maps, mods, and etc., Sven Co-op is a fantastic adition to the modding community. What still blows my mind is the amount of grainy detail held in each weapon design. I have absolutely no idea how so much detail can be put into a Goldsrc powered game, but this layered on top of the gritty original Half-Life textures definitely provides a nice contrast.

Afraid of Monsters DC

Mod review

The one thing you'd expect from horror games nowadays is that you wouldn't expect a cheesy name. Afraid of Monsters sounds like a cheesy name, but this game is serious business. Many games scare you cheaply with loud noises. This game does do that, but there's more atmosphere to this than just a dark hallway. Starting off in a hospital with absolutely no one around gives somewhat of a Silent Hill feel. You're all alone, that is, until you turn the lights out. For a game that uses the Goldsrc engine, you'd expect the same low-res textures that originally came pre-packaged with it. The use of custom textures in this game is phenomenal. It gives the game more atmosphere and more life. The only time this turns into a problem is during the end-game, where a moving texture is used repeatedly. One absolutely great thing about the game is that the sound combined with the dark produces ridiculous effects. No doubt you'll be ******** your pants with the next noise coming along or a zombie running at you full speed in the limited flashlight. The story is quite interesting. Four endings seems a bit much, especially when all four play almost exactly the same. This'll give you a great scare, trust me. Normally I'm not easily scared outside of cheap scares, but if this game kept me from playing more than 15 minutes at a time, then it should definitely give you a decent scare.
