Deus Ex: Revision

Mod review

At first, I did not like this mod too much because of how cryptic it was and that alot of mods would not work.

However, after discovering you could use the unified Deus Ex mod of Shifter and Bio together, this made this mod alot more enjoyable.

Granted, some mods still didn't work, but hey, at least most did, especially the ones I liked most.

Anyway, I really do like some of detail put into this one. The hub worlds feel larger and more like a real city rather than just a few maps levels here and there.

Even the soundtrack was pretty nice as well. Was it as good as the original? Eh, not really, but I'd be lying if I didn't say some of them were pretty awesome, especially ones like Area 51 underground. Seriously, that music was just so creepy, it fit the atmosphere perfectly, almost too perfectly I have to say.

So yea, with the unified mod, this game is definitely a 7 out of 10.

Mod review

This is a mod I have a love/hate relationship with. After playing it myself, I can clearly see why people really like it. It improves on some flaws of the game and even brings in new weapons that really enhance the gameplay.

Weapons like the laser rifle and USP are definitely welcomed additions. Even new ammo types like the 20mm EMP and taser darts are some of my personal favorites.

Probably my most favorite modification is the fact you can now carry up to 4 ballistic armors and camos for one item slot each rather than one per slot. That was a huge pet peeve of mine.

So yea, kudos to the game developers for adding these things to this already masterpiece of a game.

Now with that said, let me make one thing very clear: this is the most frustrating mod I have ever played for this game! It can be downright sadistic at times. Worse yet, it can be brutally unfair as well.

Let's start with some of modifications I did not like at all.

#1: The GEP gun no longer has a locked on target feature. Ok, seriously, WTH?! Did these developers not realize the name of this weapon? It's a Guided Explosive Projectile. In other words, this weapon is specifically made to lock onto targets.

Worse yet, the rockets are way too powerful. It's way too easy to blow yourself up even 10 feet away.

That's just unacceptable IMHO. If you guys wanted to make blowing up targets more challenging, then you should have just put in a different rocket launcher all together. Don't go messing up one of the best weapons of this game!

#2: The combat gameplay is horribly unbalanced. It basically rewards headshots and nothing else. I get it, headshots are supposed to be the main way to attack, but making it so body shots are mostly ineffective unless you do alot of them? Again, unacceptable. And seriously, why do headhsots have a 8X or 9X multiplier ratio? Wouldn't 2-3 times be enough?

#3: This mod is horrendously stingy with the ammo pickups. I can't tell you how many times I've busted open a crate and there was nothing in it. Seriously, that's just dirty! Why would you place ammo boxes in the levels if there's nothing inside of them? Not to mention there was even locked doors or hatches that did the exact same thing. What gives?! Why lock something if there's no reward for unlocking it? Do you people get a kick out of trolling players?

There was times I was barely had enough ammo to get by. I understand wanting to make it a challenge, but that's not the way to do it. Add more enemies around the area or make getting the ammo more harder by having it locked with a code or unbreakable door.

Severely limiting the ammo is just frustrating because you have enemies and can't get close to them without getting killed!

Anyway, to wrap this review up, I can clearly say this mod is not for me. It's too difficult, erratic, severely handicaps the players and expects them deal with stuff that is not even possible to get past. Like for example, they replaced the big military bots with the small ones in the MJ12 underground lab. How the heck are you supposed to get by that? At least with the big ones, you could work around it by timing it right due to their slow speed.

But this? That's impossible. How can you possibly get by that when they pump you full of lead so quickly?

And don't give me, "You just suck at this game. Get better, noob" I have been playing this game for the last 4 years and of all the mods I have used, this is the only one that has made me rage and curse more than I ever have with any other.

Seriously, I'm beginning to think this mod was made by a sadist. No offense to the mod developers here, but you guys clearly made this game alot harder than it needed to be.

Like I said, I'm all for a challenge, but a FAIR one. This is not a fair challenge, not even close.
