Oh the original game is one of my all time favorites, if not my all time favorite on its own. I wish I could get the experience of playing it for the first time again. So much fun.
You need the entirety of Medieval 2: Total War (so the expansion as well) to install and play Third Age Total War.
You need to buy both the base game and the expansion for this mod to work, as it is built on that version of the game. Now the reason that some people were saying you only need one campaign from the expansion installed is that to run the mod through your Steam version of the game you will need to install the mod, and then re-name the mod's campaign folder to one of the expansion campaigns. The campaigns that we are talking about are the actual campaign folders that are part of the Medieval 2 program files. There should be 4 or 5. One for each of the 4 campaigns from the expansion pack and then I believe the base game has one as well.
That sounds a little more convoluted than it probably is, but just use this guide here to install it once you have Medieval 2 installed: Steamcommunity.com
Or, alternatively, go to twcenter.net/forums and find the Third Age Total War mod subforum for a guide if that one there isn't helpful.
Read the most recent "News" - they're aware of the Officers armaments being screwy, and they're working to fix it.
Twcenter.net <---- read this thread....basically use the launcher to get the update, and move all your TGW files back into the TGW Files Folder and move the update into the TGW Files folder as well.

Fan-freaking-tastic. A thunderstorm is rolling in where I live. Normally this means the power will fail as well (Rural Canada FTW!) which in that case means....no TGW for me tonight. :(
