Gauntlet was my all time favorite arcade game of the 80's.
And for good reason - I could play for a _long_ time on a quarter.
I still have my high score encoded into a piece of c64 software I called madcat dos.
(which, strangely I cant find a screen cap of...)
It was in excess of 1.9 million. There were not many 80's games where that was do-able with on regular score. (some games, like 1942 giving an obscene 10 mil bonus when you finished them...)

Mind you, these days 1.9 mil is not a lot in gauntlet. I can easily get 8 mil (or more) in the same time frame. But then today, all the tricks are recorded. 8000 pt deaths, score multiplier, etc.

So, how is the "new" gauntlet?
Well, they have some of the old sound effects.
They have partially captured the essence of the original.
well...
Except for a couple things.

Controls (for a PC gamer anyway) suck.
It seems they designed it for a game pad. As a hardcore mouse and keyboard gamer (with some of the higher priced high end products like strike 7 and mmo 7 that dont add jack for game skills...but are convenient if you already have them.) I can say they could have done better. Heck, if you had key bindings and aliases so you could do some mad reconfiguring would be great.
What did I end up using? An X-arcade and a RAT9 mouse.

And then theres having to bust open every piece of scenery you find to look for gold...really, what? why do that? because theres an achievement and when you get it your randomly found gold is boosted.

My biggest grief is the potions - you CANT use them. Really.
I spent maybe 5 minutes trying to find the control combo that fired a potion and blasted every enemy on the screen. Keys open doors, generators make monsters, the wizard has a fireball, the warrior an axe, the elf a bow, and the valkyrie a sword. But potions dont BOOM.

Nope, you need relics...which use potions as ammo. Seriously?
You use all that gold you found in the scenery to buy them.
So, why isnt there a "classic" option to use potions as bombs?
(Maybe there is, I read something about a classic thingy.)

Now, the elf does have a pretty cool bomb. But it does not zap every enemy on screen.

And death? One single touch...ONE. And you are dead.
What the heck happened to just taking 200 health??
And health is another issue...apparently there is a limit.
You have a health bar and if you eat more food when its full, it does nothing.
I guess they missed the health build up in the original game too.

It really needs some kind of "classic" option for die hard fans of the original.
I'm going to play some more to see if it gets better.

I heard they were re-doing gauntlet. I had to check it out.
This is the "hub" start screen. I'll be posting some more.
No big issue here - except its not really a hub. You can only enter one level 1 door - the other two level 1 doors are locked.
