In 85 I didnt play elf, and I didnt like anyone who did.
Why?
They tended to be a bunch of key grabbing, food and potion shooting gits.
And never, EVER, let an elf get extra speed! Not in the original or the sequel, gauntlet II.
The original wizard was my main character, and sometimes I did warrior.
Valkyrie was pretty lackluster as well. Nothing specific, just her shots and melee hits didnt have warriors power, her magic potion was weak, and her best trait - armor, did very little in the original game.
In this remake, so far I like elf the best.
His shots do decent damage, the bomb is great on generators, and - he has a _sniper_ shot! The little guy is freaking Legolas!
I havent tried the other characters yet. The control scheme is pretty rude, so learning is slow going. The elf just happens to have a good set of starter skills.
Going back to the original sequel, gauntlet II, what did they do?
Well, they took the great gameplay of the original and blew it!
How?
The game actively discriminates against any non-elf player.
Wizard and warrior by themselves get less food, and good fortune.
Not only that, instead of having constant food levels, they mucked with it.
Sometimes levels have food in some spots, sometimes they dont.
Thats right, there are "starvation" stages.
Really, wtf?
Seems they didnt like it that in the original you could beat the game with a quarter (once you leveled up your playing skills) with pretty much any character.
The wizard and the warrior were the best though.
Someone didnt like it that you could play the game, get good at it and win.
I guess they missed the whole point of the reason for video games (and the entire billion dollar industry) existing is that they ARE FUN! To play. Yeah, go figure.
Maybe this is what they really wanted to make: Youtube.com
