Republic at War

Mod review

I am giving this mod a 7 due to a few of the glaring issues it has, most notably the AI and some other bugs. I do think this mod has some good sound design and voiceovers used from other games really add to it. Some of the ship models like the Venator and Lucrehulk don't look quite right. The Venators coloring is not very accurate to the films at all. The space side of the game is why most people play Empire at War still, and is where the game shines. However this mod needs more polishing and a few more units for each faction. The fighters/bombers look great, so do alot of the ships aside from the before mentioned ones.

The Republic side uses some ships that were never seen in the films, while they aren't bad they could look a bit more republic in colorations etc. I am a sucker for the art side of games. The supposed AI fix released doesn't truly fix the AI issues. Other mods like ORAW or the Legacy era one don't mess with the AI functionality and they play better than this mod.

Why the modders felt the need to meddle with a new AI setup I don't know, but clearly its only resulted in the mod being semi broken.

Empire at War Expanded: Thrawn's Revenge

Early access mod review

This is a pretty good mod, not as interesting as some of the other ones and it has some lag issues but overall its good. However I felt the Star Destroyers, particularly the red one to be rather lame looking texture wise, they just look flat and undetailed. Ive seen way better ISD models around this site. And the User interface is an improvement over the look of the standard games. But its a bit too clean and slick for a game set in the used universe semi industrial look of this star wars era. The fighter and small ship models look good, but the larger ships could look better.

The mod also lags a bit, or at least more so than the standard game. I also don't like how the big fleet construction unit looks, it just doesn't look like a shipyard or like any ship could come out of it. I just can't help but feel this mod doesn't quite capture the feel of the era this game is based around.

Legacy Era: Second Imperial Civil War

Mod review

Pros: Great ship models, doesn't lag quite as much as other mods like CAW or ORAW. Depicts an interesting and unique era of Star Wars visual style.

Cons: EAW isn't really the best game for realism, even the standard EAW shows it. The ship models in this mod are very well done but the fighters and bombers tend to be maybe 10-15% too small and unless you zoom in far you really can't enjoy the cool ship models. This isn't a huge deal however. Sometimes the battles can get too hectic with more players than 1v1. I have had 2v2 battles freeze the game.

The game engine just can't handle too many ships and effects going on across the map at one, CAW is a perfect example of this and has far worse lag than this mod however. The standard EAW does not lag at all, no matter how many battle crusiers I have on the screen.
