MISERY

Mod review

A fantastic mod. Normally I wouldn't assign such a high rating to a mod that still has bugs and stability issues but I made an exception because the idea behind this mod: hardcore realism and difficulty, is something I enjoy so much. Just got shot? Well assuming you even manage to survive (more often than not you won't, even when shot once!) you're gonna feel it, your screen is going to shake and you might even drop your gun. Need to stop the bleeding? Well find some cover, put your gun away and take a few moments to apply a bandage. And if you need to apply first aid then you'd better withdraw from battle, find a quiet spot and take a few minutes to use that medkit! Other nice touches include helmets and visors that actually show on your screen and can impair your vision, a detailed and realistic repair mechanism and ridiculously scarce ammo. You'll need to scavenge and sell crap to raise money for ammo.

Many casual gamers will find this level of realism/difficulty very frustrating. But there are countless games on the market to satisfy the casual gamer (not to mention vanilla Call of Pripyat on an easier skill level). But for hardcore gamers there really isn't anything else like this. If you've played the Wanderers Edition mod for Fallout 3 on hardcore settings then this gives you a rough Idea but it's still doesn't come close to this.

What makes this special is the sense of urgency you get on a regular basis while in the zone. Perhaps you've just barely survived a shootout and used the last of your medical supplies. Now it's getting dark, you're hungry and tired (which effects your stamina BTW) you're low on ammo and need to get back to a safehouse. In other games you might just be able to fast-travel or perhaps there just wouldn't be so many hazards between you and safety. But in MISERY you might just find that your troubles are only just beginning!
