Well... Instead of putting it another GAME engine... How bout put it in an engine like UDK where it is, it's own game... Sorta

Would it be possible to change engines? or is it too far into development?

Perhaps at the end of this all you could sell your 3D models and actually get something out of these years of work? Selling the game wouldn't work, because of legal problems, But I see real potential in this.
