The Trapdoor

Mod review

This is why I give this mod 10/10:

I loved the fact that this mod was based off a children's show and twisted into a kind of Grims Fairytale version with a much more adult and terrifying theme. It could have been told rather badly like some of the movies that came out last year with fairy tales gone horror (Hansel and Gretel are supernatural hunters or something? What?) but no.

This was entirely different. And very well done.

The voice acting was excellent! Both actors portrayed their roles in a manner that gave life to their characters. Burke (I hope I didn't confuse the names) is my favorite. He succeeds in making you feel utterly helpless and pathetic in the middle of all of this chaos, scrambling and begging for a way out. Having Boney around serving the purpose that he did made it even better. You are terrified; so long have you endured this terror that the only thing you know you can trust and cannot be taken away from you is that one skull. And that's Boney. He cannot be eaten by the thing and you can hold the skull tightly to you when the things try to come kill you when your sanity drops.

And that's the other thing about this that I love. The sanity modification. This place can be PITCH BLACK. I remember at one point falling into the dark catacombs and Burke REALLY hated it. He kept saying he shouldn't stay and that he didn't want to be there. Let him sit much longer in the dark and Burke will start to go crazy; muttering to himself, crying out in fear, begging for Boneys help and general insanity until he passes out. Not only that but the monsters will appear if your sanity gets too low. I didn't have Boney with me at the time so I was very careful to get out, sneak past the creature and flee to the checkpoint where I regained Boney. With Boney your sanity heals, the creatures disappear and you feel safe. Great job, Boney!

All this to say: Excellent job! I'm glad I've found another gem of storytelling and I hope you continue on more projects!

Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs

Game review may contain spoilers

First of all, I want to say this game was brilliant. I will put down the reasons why I gave it a 9/10. I gave this careful thought...

This game focused more on the psychological aspect of terror rather than jump scares and in your face visual terrors. The true "horror" of the game felt like it was in the peripheral encounters with these piggy men that felt like they almost surrounded you earlier on in the game. You didn't always see them up close until later in the game when you were finally faced with these bizarre and unnatural creations. Then to suddenly face yourself and realize what you had done...only to have to tear yourself apart again...wow....

That being said, I did miss some of the puzzle aspects from the first Amnesia. While there was still a little bit of investigation which seemed to point more towards the inner questions of the character themselves...I was hoping for a bit more trouble destroying the machine. Or maybe even a bit more difficulty getting around the piggy men. But that is my personal preference.

Thirdly, I understand why they didn't add things like oil and laudanum or sanity potions. This character had not gone through the same things that Daniel did which gave him his phobia. This character was already settled in his actions and knew (mostly) what he was doing and what had happened. His condition was different and focused more on his fevered illusions of his children. I'm not sure even a sanity potion would have helped. As for the lamp...since, again, the fear of the dark played no role in this game, it was not needed.

The twists, tugs and turns of the game were over all very enjoyable and I loved the questions and scholarly humor used within the notes. It did not shy away from going inside the mind of someone willing to do good yet turning to twisted ways of "purifying" the imperfections of humanity. It touched on many disturbing thoughts and questions that many might shy away from. Very, very well done.
