I played this a few months ago, even before some of the recent patches, and I thought it was very well put together! The voice acting was stellar, the level design was great and I encountered very few bugs, which for a Custom Story, little to no bugginess is unheard of! It was awesome thinking of ways to traverse and progress while keeping Boney close. The scares were few and far between and that's a good thing. I did a Let's Play and the most difficult part of doing it was the fact that I wanted so badly to keep playing but my recording schedule was done. I'll be playing anything that comes from Aetheric and so far, from videos I've seen of other works, there's some SERIOUS talent here.

I'm giving this a 10 because it felt good to play something unique for once. Also it's probably the only Amnesia custom content that I will remember favourably, alongside Obscurity and The Great Work.

I'll summarise this mod thusly: The Trapdoor is the perfect blend of comedy and horror. It is darkly comic in such a manner that makes it unsettling rather than embarrassing (on that note, the voice acting is some of the best that I've ever heard). It introduces interesting new mechanics (I won't go into detail because I don't want to give any spoilers). It has layers of intrigue. More is suggested than is explained, but enough is explained for you to piece the puzzle together and fill in the rest of the blanks in your mind.

Strongly recommended!

I love this mod! It has a unique sanity mechanic, great story, good mapping, good puzzles, and some unique inspiration. Great job!

Brilliant!
I won't waste space here to speak of this MOD, because it simply has to be played to be understood. And once you get a grip on things, you are in for an awesome ride with great puzzles.

This is a MUST PLAY!

The Trapdoor is an overall excellent custom story for Amnesia: The Dark Descent.

While the inspiration for this story was a little strange, it was executed perfectly once transferred to the Amnesia universe and therefore was made all the more terrifying. By reading the notes I was not going to be opening that trapdoor anytime soon. As I was walking through the basement area, and had times where I had to go past it, it seemed to radiate an evil purpose.

The maps were beautifully done. The upstairs areas had a great Brennenburg Castle feel and the basement was very catacomb-like. The basement is probably the most interesting part of the game. With the limited tinderboxes it becomes very disorienting (although I guess you get a taste of that when you first enter them. I'm talking about the wonky staircase right at the start of the area). I was also fond of the garden area that one comes across, it looked very beautiful.

Finally, I need to talk about this story's original mechanic. The Boney-sanity mechanic. This is an interesting twist on Amnesia's sanity. In order for monsters to appear at all, you need to lose your sanity (and even if they are in your head, they still hurt you). In order to keep yourself together, you need to carry something familiar, in this case the skull Boney. Instead of relying on Sanity Potions or lit-areas, you can pick him up and your wits will be restored. This comes at a price, however, as there are times you'll need to leave him in order to accomplish tasks. This makes it a challenge to, say, un-barricade a door and get back to the skull before the monsters come out. You only have a limited time. There are times when it is a pain to carry him around but that adds a bit of difficulty and fun.

I did not have too much trouble with bugs or crashes (and I'm certain the patch helped) but whenever I quit and came back, the game did not break and that is a great plus.

So thank you Aetheric games for a very memorable story!

This game is complete and utter globbits. I love it!

This mod just made me so frustrated. Yes, it has great production quality and plenty of unique features. That's why I give it a 6 and not a 2. I don't think the developers intended for me to be wandering around aimlessly for 90% of the mod, but that's what it turned into for me. Every single time I made an ounce of progress, I would immediately get stuck for another 30 minutes before just consulting a walkthrough. This completely broke all my immersion and the pacing. Some of it may have been my fault, but some of the leaps of logic you would have needed to make in order to solve some of the puzzles were ludicrous. How am I to know that an objective of "find the rest of the notes" means backtrack through the whole game making sure I got literally every note that was written?

It was also made very clear early on that, as long as you kept boney around, there was no threats or scares.

I really wanted to like this mod, but it was just so hard to get through, so overall, despite the production quality, I can't say this mod is really anything above average.

Story: 7/10
Scare Factor: 5/10
Gameplay: 3/10

Overall rating: 6/10 (5/10, +1 for the production quality)

The trapdoor is inspired in ''the trap door'', a cartoon made in clay-mation.
There are few words to describe this full conversion mod: Strange, dark, twisted, outstanding; but the word that describe it best its ''different''
This mod is the most ''different'' experience you will ever have playing Amnesia.
Insanely deep, insanely twisted, insanely fun.
An amazing experience with no equal.
Sometimes, the longer the mod, the longer the development of the idea. In some cases, with longer development of the idea, it results in high quality mods.
This mod itsan exception.
But, If this your first time playing it, this will be a painfully dark paranoia fueled long experience.
One that will left you a deliscious flavor on your now insanely twisted mind.
