I had Rebellion installed since 2012, and have modded/unmodded etc. since then... I was getting crashing when I first applied CTA 1.2, no messages or anything. 3-10 minutes of playing, single or multi-, regardless of map size, unit counts etc. it would just crash out. Finally got one message after a dozen crashes.
I updated graphics drivers first, no change.
You may have already tried this, but I finally went for a clean, fresh install of the game from steam (after the built-in steam file integrity check actually failed, indicating issues with local game file(s), cool feature)and I have been crash free ever since. I personally went through and cleaned out all my old mod folders and saves in "Documents" as well, separate from the game install, just to make sure everything was as clean as possible.
Of course, remember to apply the LAA after the fresh install (and before even launching the game).
