Yep, i also have the same problem. You need to press escape and then back to game to make the background gone.

For those who's experiencing missing text on Mac, please do this
- Find the mods folder
- Open DATA folder and delete FONT.xml
- Open TEXTURE folder and delete FONT.dds

You need to delete all data with "FONT" in both texture and data folder, and then you're good to go.
In some case, MAC doesn't support custom font, this thing also happen in other Mods, every time i did what i said before, it's always work.
