Lair of the Evildoer

Game review

Overall it was a great experience that I picked up for pretty cheap. I was completely satisfied. There was challenge, a little bit of strategy, lots of action, and a moderately interesting story to tie the gameplay all together.

It's not a perfect game by any means though. If you are one to obsess over graphics, the game isn't very pretty and the animation is average. Meanwhile, the AI you face isn't really intelligent and easy to trap on walls. However, I found bought the art style/animation and the AI linearity to be redeeming to the experience just because of the feel they brought to the game.

The game as a whole isn't particularly serious or deep - just good fun gameplay wrapped up with a nice difficulty curve. I'd say it's definitely worth playing if you're snooping for something new.

DLC Quest

Game review

Okay let's be honest. You don't buy this game for the gameplay. You don't buy this game for the story. You don't buy this game for the graphics, the sound, the voice acting, the animation, or any other reason that typically comes up in a conversation when someone says "This is a good game! You should buy it!"

No, you buy a game like DLC Quest already knowing what it's going to be about, how it's going to pull it off, and to a certain extent, the budget it was made with. You know from the moment you read the title whether this is right up your alley and going to make your day or if it's just some indie artsy fartsy thing trying to be cute that's not going to be all that fun.

You already know all of that without me saying a word. So let me say something you don't already know:

It works. It's not just a punchline followed by a waste of time, but it has a delivery. It's not just about the bare minimum of DLC but about industry trends, pandering to false demographics, extended gameplay rip offs, and everything else that is mediocre at present with the games industry.

I physically laughed out loud at this game at least seven times.

It's short, sweet, and very well made when you consider that it would have been much either for one guy to make the game with minimal effort and no bug testing and make a similar point but sacrificing all credibility. This game succeeds in being an example of satire and solution.

Well worth the price for anyone who is interested enough from the title to want to read a review.

Deity

Game review

This is one of the most interesting game concepts I've played in a long time - or at least one of the most well done of the interesting concepts. I've been playing a lot of indie games lately and when I saw this one made by a gaming university I figured it was worth a look.

I am definitely not disappointed to say the least. The fact that it was free made it a phenomenal experience in and of itself, however it makes it hard to judge value and worth when you are comparing it to nothing and just saying whether or not I enjoyed it doesn't mean much from a game optimist. So instead - I'm going to pretend like this game was $10 on Steam or Xbox Live Arcade or Playstation Network.

In that context the only downsides is that there is a noticeable and disappointing lack of story or context and the loading times aren't ideal. I know you guys made the engine from scratch which is one of the reasons why I'm letting it slide, but it definitely takes away from the immersion. As for the story, my personal preference is that context can be added to improve any game concept so if you disagree, then ignore me.

In conclusion, if I had had to pay $10 for this game, I'd give it a B+. Great job guys - good luck in the industry!

The Stanley Parable

Mod review

This is one of the few games that I've ever played that has managed to be both thought provoking and funny. While the gameplay is definitely lacking - it wasn't created for it's gameplay and thus shouldn't be judged on it.

Stanley is subject 427 at a company and the game starts off as a soothing narrator informs you, the player, that today is different for Stanley. As you progress through the game, the narrator informs you of the decisions that Stanley makes. Where the game shows it's true mettle is that it allows you to disobey the narrator. Depending on when and where you disobey, you will get completely different stories with completely different endings.

All in all, the game is a good one to two hour experience with more creativity in execution than most AAA titles on the market today.
