The Crypt/Krypta - 3/10

This custom story is... Consistently terrible all the way throughout, start to finish. The house in the beginning is the ugliest house I've seen in any custom story I've played up to this point. There's an overabundance of light sources making the house extremely bright, and every single surface of the floor has rugs all over it that just look like complete ****.

Even in levels that could possibly be considered good design, the creator continues to **** it up by hiding items required to progress in seriously ridiculous places that the player has NO WAY of knowing they're there in the first place. Need to open a gate? Slide a bookshelf? Have fun looking for the miniature lever hidden behind something, or blending in with the background! Need to dig something up? There's no indication of where to use the shovel! Need to dig up a grave? Good luck finding the extremely hidden shovel!

It doesn't help that through the ENTIRE CUSTOM STORY you're given like 1 or 2 bottles of oil. You also aren't given ANY tinderboxes, except for like 5 maximum! The grammar is also very bad. There's also a puzzle at the end where you hop across platforms that disappear underneath you and there is no tell of where to go, it's just trial and error, have fun dying repeatedly while the main character pretends they did it first try.

PEIRAPRIGOND

Mod review

This is probably one of the very worst custom stories ever created. I wasn't even able to finish it purely because of how miserable it was making me feel. My friend recommended this to me, insisting that it's good and that I will like it, but after having played it for as long as I did, that ended up feeling like nothing else but a sick joke to waste my time for the day. Every room of every level completely lacks any natural light, and the amount of tinderboxes and oil it gives you is pitifully low, forcing the player to be constantly shrouded in darkness unless they already know every single thing they should be doing and where to go. No doors are labelled and there isn't a clear indication where any key or item should go. I'm constantly wandering around using the next key or needle I find on literally everything I find that's locked, trying to find where I would use it until I inevitably do. The main hub area is also extremely laggy and drops my FPS down to 6. It is unbearably unfun and I strongly advise anyone reading this to NEVER play it. The only reason this isn't rated 1/10 is because the actual design and detail of the levels is pretty alright for what it is. Although, three doors in the hub go to the same room which is confusing and annoying. I wish this custom story didn't exist.

Script-Controlled Lantern Color

Mod review

Doesn't have any natural environments such as a hallway or a room of any kind. No way to truly see what the color scripts look like. Not good for just testing out regular lanterns either. Very disappointing.

The scripts work, at least... If your lantern uses a pointlight. Doesn't work with spotlight lanterns.

The Night Guest

Mod review

Mediocre but acceptable quality story. Frustrating chase sequences and level design that wasn't enjoyable to go through, and some things didn't work such as having to enter through the window of the house (I straight up couldn't fit through it so I used freecam). However, the scares were good sometimes such as the giant brute head in the dark cave.

The story is great, and monsters were very well utilized. Excellent level design and monster sound design, never quite knowing where the enemy is was a great idea that lead to many scary moments. However, the early parts of the game felt too calm. Oil was too generously given out, and I felt I could play the entire story without turning the lantern off. The choice to disable sanity was interesting, however it gave little reason to actually use the lantern with the only exception being that darkness glow is almost non-existent. However, I find this to be a mildly irritating reason to incentivize the player to use the lantern. There are times I would have liked to turn off the lantern and enjoy the environment lit by candles, but the almost nonexistent darkness glow made it impossible to see anything in darker areas. A few times, I felt the player wasn't properly communicated to. It didn't make sense where exactly I should be going and what I should be doing. The monsters killing you in one hit was a bad choice in my opinion. Part of what makes monster interactions scary is the struggle to survive, it prolongs the encounter and keeps the player engaged within it. But if you kill the player instantaneously, it ends the interaction too soon and the player will be less scared the second time around.

AMNESIA '98

Mod review

Very original and perfectly manages to be what it claims. The "remake" of the OST is amazing, and I love all of the bitcrushed sounds and pixelated filter and texture warping. You did amazing work here.

As good as it is though, the blue filter replacing the insanity effect is incredibly distracting and annoying. If your sanity is anything below Crystal Clear, you have a permanent blue VFX blocking your view which ruins the experience rather than benefitting it.

I also find it upsetting you did not create custom themes for the Brute and Suitor. Brute has a different patrol theme, if I'm not mistaken, but the exact same danger theme. Suitor just uses the Grunt's.

The very low FOV does not add to the experience, it just makes it nauseating and headache inducing to play. You added some even lower resolution textures than vanilla Amnesia has, but it seems you didn't finish doing that because only a small handful of things look downgraded and it clashes with the more higher resolution textures.

FINALLY, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY

The custom shaders pack that this mod comes with is incompatible with the most recent version of Amnesia. Areas are extremely dark and it's impossible to see anything. I've had to swap around many shader files from vanilla amnesia in order to get it fixed, and I wish I could've seen what it was originally meant to look like. Luckily, other than the lighting, all the other VFX are here. Weird pixel bloom filter, texture warping, some other thing - However, the texture warping and the "other thing" are completely incompatible with custom stories which is very disappointing... Meaning I have to disable/remove the both of them. At least the pixel filter tied to Bloom is compatible with custom stories. Just a filter.

Lost The Lights

Mod review

Impossible to complete the custom story due to poor level design.

Doors that I am supposed to go into, cannot be opened because of the environment blocking the way for the door to be opened.

I also died and respawned in one of these rooms, therefore becoming softlocked because the door cannot open.

Keys behind paintings have fallen outside of the map, forcing me to use debug mode's freecam to grab them.

There's also an area that has a room with a lever in a closet. The lever can only move towards the left, which activates nothing. It has to move right, but will NOT move right.

In the same level, there's a lever next to a big bookshelf that's supposed to move downwards to move the bookshelf. It will NOT move downwards.

There's a section in a very dark area filled with "living" stone statues that has a misplaced wall.

You're supposed to move the lever up (or down) but it's in side of the wall, and although you can grab it, you can't fully move it up or down to move the wall to the secret room.

As of right now, I am softlocked in a room. The power went out and I had to turn it back on, the lever is next to a dead body at a computer with a quickly flashing light.

After I turned on the power, the door remained completely locked and there's not a way to escape.

I quit playing.
