I think i remember a moment from the Dawn of War 2 campaign in which Cyrus refers the eldar idea of orks slowing down the tyranids was actually possible...if those were not the recruiting worlds of the Blood Ravens. If i recall correctly Cyrus recalls a system that was allowed to be overrun by orks in order to actually keep the tyranids occupied until further Imperial forces could be deployed to deal with the threat.
That said orks fighting tyranids in other galaxies shouldn't be that odd. More i think that if orks didn't exist the Imperium would have already fallen prey to tyranids or other of the races beyond the borders of the Imperium. Orks do have their skills despite being somewhat problematic, the fact that they are hard to eliminate completely is sometimes a good thing.
Best way to advance the storyline is for Ghazkull to head to Octarius for the Waaagh to end all Waaaghs. More Tyranid hive fleets head there to feed on orks while more orks head there to fight. Only way it could get better is if the war took place in the Eye of Terror and the Necrons got involved. Bam! 4 enemies of the Imperium taking care of themselves.
However, both the orks and tyranids are only getting stronger so whoever wins, the Imperium has to deal with a more powerful threat. I read a fanfiction where the orks and tyranids end up combining from the constant fighting and absorption to form a hybrid race called the New Devourer.
Basically takes place another 10,000 years into the future (51st millennium) and is an even more grimdark setting than the current one. Other Highlights include:
-The Emperor dies and becomes a Chaos God
-Chaos expands outside the Eye of Terror
-The Imperium fractures into several small empires
-Many Space Marine chapters become war bands, tyrants, or mercenaries
-Eldar become extinct (or are so few it seems they are finally extinct)
-The Tau give up on The Greater Good and become pessimists who blame the problems of the galaxy on everyone else and decide they all must be purged (kinda like The Imperium, yes?)
-The Mechanicum no longer distribute their technology to the Imperium (and even other forge worlds) and many cults have formed for the Dark Mechanicum or the Void Dragon.
So I've been hearing about something, and I'd like to have it clarified.
Is it true that there are Orks in other galaxies kicking the 'Nids to the curb?
Hard to say, but check out the Octarius War for the Ork's happiest sector. Until the Elfdar ruin the fun with their bio-purges.
