Total War is a computer strategy game series developed by The Creative Assembly in Horsham, UK. Its games combine turn-based strategy and resource management, with real-time tactical control of battles. The first game of the series, Shogun: Total War was released in 2000. The most recent major game released was Total War: Rome II on 3 September 2013.
The series has also spawned some very popular mods, from Europa Barbarorum and Roma Surrectum, which seek to create a more historically accurate environment, to fantasy interpretations such as Third Age: Total War, based on The Lord of the Rings, and Westeros: Total War, based on A Song of Ice and Fire.

has anyone ever thought about Mount And Blade? I've never played it but it looks like a total war game.

If your going MNB, go with Warband. Its got enough mods to satisfy every possible aspect of ground combat from Roman times to the present (although it clearly excels in the hack n' slash). With the Commander Battles from the Napoleonic DLC it allows you to be that officer from TW line battle.
I'd say "yes it is like TW, except you are the guy on the ground and not the great general hovering above."

It is EPIC ! but not really a Total War style, M&B is adventure rather than strategy,TW is Turn based strategy game set to represent a specific real time line in a real world while M&B is a FPS and 3rd person shooter and it is set in a fictitious world called "Carladia",unless if you were talking about M&B WFAS which is set in the 17TH century Eastern Europe and Polish Lithuanian wars of that time era .

They announced Mount & Blade 2 Bannerlord this may like to wait for that game. As for the first game. I played Warband a lot, it's a fantastic game!
