This is not so smart: allied aircraft wouldn't bomb you, but the enemy certainly would.
To prevent friendly fire, this was used by the germans in poland.
As in the first days (as tanks not flaged) there where too many friendly fire victims, because Air units could not see if enemy/allied tanks from their high position, so many panzers where shot by acciedent. As germany had the air minority at that time, no enemy bombers would be able to bomb tanks...
That white star on allied vehicles? Same idea as here; prevent friendly fire.
I thinck this picture whas taken during the sinni-japanese war of 1937 and during this war the chinese air force whas really tiny.
