In my day, we didn't have armor that exploded when hit. No, we had to string sandbags along the hull of the tank. The best part was that it usually came at the affordable price of free.
The sand bags act as soft composite armor to reduce the penetrative action of light caliber HEAT weapons. The Soviet came with a revolutionary idea to create "sand-sticks" made of quartz granules and mixed with a special epoxied resin sandwich between layers of steel plates harden at different Rockwell C coefficients, -that was the T-64- it was the first tank in the world to come with composite armor back in these days. Chobham armor is a cold war reverse engineer of the soviet "Dolly Parton" (NATO name) armor. Credits goes to the soviets for creating the toughest armor at these time...

War back then was not as messed up as today now we have drones, ATGMs and such things you do not know where the hit is going to come from.
