Description

The Tosan (Wild Horse) is based on the FV101 Scorpion light tank, however it is re-engined and re-armed. Iranian army acquired 250 of the British Scorpions in the late 1970s. A large number of them are still operational. In 1997 Iran claimed that it finished development of this tank. Some sources claim that mass production of this vehicle commenced in 2008.

The Tosan, unlike it's predecessor the FV101 Scorpion armored reconnaissance vehicle, is intended to support infantry units. Vehicle is armed with 90-mm gun, witch replaced the previous 76-mm gun of the Scorpion. The new gun is likely to be reverse-engineered from Brazilian Engesa EE-9 Cascavel however it's not confirmed. Vehicle is fitted with new targeting and firing systems.

Some sources claim that front armor of the Tosan provides protection against 12.7-mm rounds. All-round protection is likely to be against 7.62-mm rounds and artillery shell splinters.

The Tosan has fewer wheels than the Scorpion, but is slightly higher. It is fitted with new diesel engine. Vehicle is so light, that it can travel to forward operating areas on it's own, without wearing out it's running gear. It is worth mentioning that other tanks are usually carried by tank transporters over long distances. In Iran this armored vehicle is referred as the quick reaction tank, because of it's rapid response capability. Vehicle is not amphibious.
