This group is for everyone who like tanks, sci-fi tanks, real tanks, funny tanks, you can put here tank mods, tank maps, simply everything with straps, armor and gun :D
The new pictures and main specs of T-90M (ob.188M) were appeared on a Russian site. This tank was first time demonstrated for Putin in Dec.10 at N-Tagil. It has got:
- New bigger turret without weakened frontal areas and with the all-aspect ERA covering.
- ERA 'Relict'
- Additional roof protection against atop attacking munition.
- New additional autoloader, placed on the aft part of the turret and able using the new longer sub-caliber rods.
- Aft ammo storage.
- Panoramic 3-channel IR commander site with improved anti-split/rounds protection.
- 7.62 mm automatic turret instead of 12.7mm.
- Totally new 2A82 125 mm MG (2A46M5 - optional).
- FCS with the net-centric module.
- New radio.
- New navigation system.
- New anti-split kevlar layer instead of the standard Russian anti-neutron layer.
- new anti-fire system.
In work:
- Mono-block power unit on 1200 hp V-99 engine.
- Steering wheel control.
T-90M - is intended for the export purpose mainly. For domestic use there was confirmed 'Burlak' program with heavy Tomsk OKBTM's input.
Heard there is a 152mm version aswell, and can't wait to see the T90B 'Burlak' :D
Wow, Russian Tech looks really impressive, wonder if the good'ol Abrams can stand up to new challenges from the East
the original abrams may be old but it's constantly uppgraded, like russian tanks.
With the same way of thinking the T-90 would be really old scince it's the development of the T-72, which is an uppgraded T-62 based on the T-54/55...
---
bottomline: why change something that works?
Except that by your logic t90 would look the same as t55, which it doesn't even come close to, but the abrams even after all the upgrades is still looking the same. T90 is a new tank, not an upgrade like the m1a2 for example.
Besides f14 were working fine and yet they were replaced, it's just the technology cycle, there is only so much you can change before replacing the platform.
Ultimately, the T-90 is an upgrade of the T-72. The t-80 is an entirely new tank however.
And his logic does work, because when you upgrade something, you change it, when you change it, it usually looks different.
edit: Actually technically the T-80 is an upgrade of the T-64
Still,if I'm not mistaken abrams tank's are being refitted and upgraded, they take the old ones put some new tech in them and that's it.Another example would be ah1 super cobra, which is really a Vietnam era helicopter upgraded with newer tech for the marines. t72's are not upgraded into t90. T90 are built from scratch, they would make them from t72's since they field lots of them and it would be cheaper, but they don't. Hence why I say it's a new platform, sort of. Even if it's designed from the t72.
Still I don't really consider this tank the true rival of abrams, it's more like a mass produced, logistically light tank. Like the t34's and t72's. I think something better is being designed, something like the t80's when they first came out.
@DEathgod65 There would be quite a fight between the 2, This and M1a2. But I think that the T90 would win solely because it can fire its atgm further than the abrams can target anything and that the T90 is much more agile and smaller.
I don't think the more agile and smaller factor really applies these days, they had no problems killing the t-72s because they were agile and smaller in 1991 and T-72s are roughly the same size as T-90s.
I have no comment on your atgm theory though, maybe you're right.
though I bet the infra red blocking smoke screen would probably make the GTGM missile miss the abrams, not that the abrams would be capable of retalitate then.
Also, take a T-55 and slap era all over it, there ya go, looks like a T-90 :p
All modern tanks look too similar, all western tanks have the same rough shape, and all the eastern tanks have the same rough shape. No variety anymore man.
Well its not the eastern world's fault the Hemispherical design is solid armour by design rather than being applied, plus nobody's seen an Abrams go against a T-80/90 with all the best it has got to throw at it
