Probably in the Soviet Union, as part of the Lend-Lease.

I thought it might have been Korea at first, but agostinho seeems to have it on the money. Red flag, same number placement on the turret, etc.

That said they did go fairly well against eachother in Korea.

Looks more like Austria, both were late models and the little village in background look like the typical Austrian. Sovjet troops occupied a Part of Austria at Wars end

It is funny, but the ruskies actually liked the Shermans a lot.

not really the russian complained about a bad engine which over heated... a bad transmission... a high profile...a bad gun!!

they prefered the T-34 to a M4 sherman!!

read that in a book called Tank Men!!

Overheating engine self, f**ked up transmission... They were right. Guess why the germans called the early versions of the sherman "Tommy Kocher"(Tommy cooker)...

"Tommy Cooker" was coined as a result of early/mid war Shermans having a slightly higher than average chance of catching fire when hit, Shermans had a superb reliability history with the Western nations that used it. I've never heard of the Soviets having a problem with it, but if they did I would guess it was caused by the weaker training of Soviet drivers(T34s were famously easy to drive, Shermans not so much).

And Soviets crews loved the Sherman, in addition to excellent visibility and a 3-man turret it was practically like riding in a Cadillac when compared to most Soviet tanks. Hell, it even had leather seats.

I heard a call of "Ronson" instead of "Tommy Cooker" as a brand of lighters :P

Indeed, the subject details are very sketchy. Some sources say the Russians loved them, some say they hated them.

Well it's not like every Russian tanker liked it or hated it, different people, different opinions.

Personally I don't even know which one I would choose. Sherman is more comfy but T34 is better in the battle. Either way they both would be knocked out in one shot from something heavy anyway. Still probably would choose the t34/85 myself, I like it's looks more, it's more nimble and has a little better armor I think, if only it was as comfortable as a Sherman....

It's just strange that every account of it seems to be the complete opposite of another one it doesn't seem right.

And i think the sherman 76w and the T-34/85 are pretty even in terms of combat, it all comes down to what hands they're in. For example in north korea they both engaged eachother fairly successfully but i think the shermans got the upper hand in the end. Had the t-34 been in soviet hands, it may have been a different story.

It's purely conjecture, but it seems to me at least part of that could come from people looking at different levels of the command structure.

There wouldn't be much reason for a Soviet general to like the Sherman, as to him its a tank that fulfills the exact same role as the T-34 but presents an added logistics burden due to using unique ammunition, spare parts, ect. However, the crews actually driving the tanks would no doubt have a very different perspective of them.
