Well the plates are place at different angles sandwich with a secret explosive compound which bizzarely does not detonate with small caliber rounds, fire, hammering, crushing, drilling. Only a powerful and sudden form of penetration will make it detonate and move the shear plates sideways in order to break the kinetic round e.g. APFSDS are break sideways into multiple sharpen pieces or HEAT are pulverized into smaller jets, hence diminishing or nullifying the penetration into the main armor of the tank...

Of course, i know what is an ERA and what is it's purpose, i dont get the "in such a way as to move sideways rapidly when the explosive detonates" part meaning.

Kontakt-5 and Knife (K-6) are the only ERA which protects your tanks from APFSDS as well !!!

The ERA plates are fixed to the side of the T-90S and are arranged in such a way as to move sideways rapidly when the explosive detonates. The movement will force any incoming shaped charge or kinetic energy penetrator to cut through more armor layers than the thickness of the plating itself, since "new" plating is constantly fed into the penetrating body. When a kinetic energy penetrator round makes contact with the ERA it be subjected to powerful sideways forces, which might be large enough to cut the rod into two or more pieces or at the very least break the penetrating rod apart. This will significantly reduce the penetrating capabilities of the penetrator round, since the penetrating force will be dissipated over a larger volume of armour. This is all possible because their is a layer of explosive sandwiched between the metal plates. The square plate that you see in the picture is aproxamately 7cm thick.

Ok, thanks now it's clear, it's like they slowly damage the rod by changing their angle (it's either because the cross section become wider and because of the sideway force) when the tip of the rod first penetrate the top layer.

This is from wiki. I was trying to find something responsible for the square movement on the picture.
