Yes, it did add too much weight with little more protection to be a good thing... It was a desperate decision of crew, they tried everything to increase protection of their thin armor.

Panther can still slice through the concrete..... while the driver can't see anything while button down...... Decrease awareness

Some people try really hard to prove the Sherman is superior to the later German tanks, that it could take them out just as easily as the German could. But a lot of photos shows that Sherman crew are no listener to naysayer.

They are being realistic, that's all.......
