I thought Light Tanks were too lightly armoured to be effective and that a lot of countries don't use them anymore, what's the benefit of having a new one now? o.o
Cheap scouting.
Benefit is having a cheap tank destroyer with the mobility of a tank. And there are a LOT of modern light tanks in existence. For example:

Hm, still not as many as main battle tanks though. I thought the concept of mobility and heavy weaponry failed in the Battlecruiser class, weren't fast enough to evade the shells of larger Battleships :\
There job is to "Snipe" enemy MBT's or provide infantry with solid fire support, not engage enemy armor head on.
Light tanks are much more mobile, can be paradroped, are amphibious also pack just as much punch as any other common tank, due to their small size are easier to conceal, can do hit and run on uneven terrain. Obviously it's not gonna survive one shot from a tank, but well hidden could score a few hits and most likely knock out any modern tank or any other vehicle for that matter. Imagine Stug with less armor, when used correctly can cause a lot of pain in the ***.
