I believe that rifles from WWI have enough power to penetrate this without trouble.
No, standard rifle ammunition in WWI was less powerful than during WWII. So no ability to penetrate such "armored rolling box" Only in 1940 Germany introduced the 7.92 cartridge named "S.m.E." - Spitzgeschoß mit Eisenkern ("spitzer with iron core"), able to penetrate an armored plate. The armour-piercing version of the French MAS 7.5mm cartridge (comparable to the German 7.92mm) could perforate, when fired by a MAS 36 rifle, 12 mm of steel at 100 m and 3 mm of steel at 400 m.
