electric!
coils (with iron core) behave like magnets if they are under electric current!
If you have old headphones open them and you will see, or just ask your physics teacher!!!
But maybe some more info about how this defence works, as I not quite understand:
outer armour lets loose if magnet deactivated????
More sense would make if outer armour is divested with magnetic power (but then outer armour will have to be magnetic)
so maybe some more research?
indeed that's why they are called electro magnets :P Anyone can make them with ease just get some copper wire wrap it around a iron nail and connect the ends of the wire to the + and - points on a 9 or 12 volt battery :P
