This group is for everyone who like tanks, sci-fi tanks, real tanks, funny tanks, you can put here tank mods, tank maps, simply everything with straps, armor and gun :D
For the Germanz it sure is, since they were outnumbered like 3:1, 5:1, they had to compensate with something, be it better quality/armor protection etc. If they lost a tank, they couldn't replace it so easilly like the Americans did with the mass produced Sherman.
And honestly, by this time (44/45) the panther's armor wasn't that good anymore. Even a T34-85 or Sherman 76w could already penetrate the front armor at 600-800 m distance, let alone the side armor at 2km+ o.O
Tiger II was the only "well" armored tank at this time :/ and that's exactly the tank that broke down the most
the panther had 80mm of frontal armor and unless the 85mm shell hit the lower armor plate it bounced off, same for the 17 pounder and 76mm US guns, 45mm of frontala rmor belongs to the t34 not panther
I'm not sure where you're getting the 45mm number, the 44/45 refers to a time period(1944-1945), not an armor thickness.
I do agree the armor of the Panther still gave it some advantage against the T34 and Sherman, though, since HVAP and other ammunition that allowed these tanks to reliably penetrate the Panther's frontal armor at medium-long ranges was still quite rare through the end of the war. The Panther was never designed to be invincible like KV or Matilda II were early in the war, rather it was meant to be able out range other tanks and to some extent it could still do that. However, the 17 lber is in a different league than the 85mm and 76mm guns, and could easily penetrate the armor of any German tank with the exception of the Tiger II at long range.
There is no need for the hull of an AA vehicle to be that armored.
