A British Chieftan main battle tank on display at Bovington tank museum. The first Chieftan model was introduced in 1967 and it proved a successful tank. It was used until the early 90s at which time it had been completely phased out by the challenger series. The driver effectively lies down allowing an overall lower height and greater slope on the armour. The Chieftan has an L11A5 120mm rifled gun.
It proved popular with middle eastern countries with many being sold to Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Jordan and Oman. The rest have either been converted for other uses, are in museums or are in storage pending sales or in case of emergency use.
