This group is for everyone who like tanks, sci-fi tanks, real tanks, funny tanks, you can put here tank mods, tank maps, simply everything with straps, armor and gun :D
Because of its longer range, with the handicap of a lower muzzle-velocity. So the original 120-mm L30A1 wasn't able to penetrate armor as effectiv as for example the L/55 120-mm form Rheinmetall.
But as i posted befor the british army in 2006 decided to change the challanger 2s main guns to the Rheinmetall L/55 120-mm smothbore tank gun...
Another reason for the declining use of HESH rounds is the switch by most armies to smoothbore cannon, since a HESH shell relies upon spin for accuracy. The British Army has kept rifled tank guns longer than many partly to maintain HESH ammunition capability, though the Challenger 2 is intended to be converted to a smoothbore in the interests of ammunition commonality with NATO partners. HESH rounds are still carried today by armoured engineer vehicles; they are typically intended for use against fortifications rather than armoured fighting vehicles. the gun looks strange... it's not just a straight metal tube :/
How so?
That also is a Rheinmetall 120-mm-smothbore tank gun with a little adjusted outer apperance ;)
yeah, and that was what I reacted on, all other tank guns are all smoth and metalic... this one i have no idea why it looks like that
No it isn't, It's actually an L30 RIFLED gun made by the British
in 2006 all challanger 2 tanks ware equiped with the Rheinmetall 120-mm-smothbore tank gun...
They haven't all been upgraded atm. But it's getting there
this is the only tank that doesnt use smothbore I wonder why...

with longer range you mean higher accuracy? And I thought the biggest handicap with rifled guns is that they don't work with HEAT rounds
with higher range i mean higher range only. auccuracy pretty much depends on the targetingdevices(of course only upto a guns max. range)...
Sir, lower muzzle velocity but higher range sounds rahter confusing :/
it's rifled so it use HESH rounds.
