Before anyone asks, yes this is basically a Pimped up type 59,
It's a heavily upgraded version, yes. Zarrar is actually an upgrade for Pakistan's Type-59 Tanks, but after the upgrade, they virtually become a new vehicle. :)
Maybe, but I STRONGLY doubt that this tank can survive a 1-1 direct encounter with a T-90, let alone come out victorious.
Well, not too much ERA and also quite light for a MBT. But I guess it's much more cheap than T90.
The Zarrar is not meant to take on T-90’s and the likes of them. That’s a job for Pakistan’s Khalid tanks. The Zarrar was meant to be an effective counter for India’s 500+ T-55 tanks, which are due for replacement by T-90’s. Consequently, Pakistan has also halted production of the Zarrar, and it will be replaced by the Khalid 2, as soon as it becomes operational. Khalid 2 is poised to become the Pakistan Army's backbone main battle tank from 2012; thus replacing 1200 obsolete Chinese T-59 and 300 T-85IIAP; is a very extensive upgrade of the current Al Khalid I. Other reports suggest that it will be an entirely new tank based on Western designs. Only 2 prototypes have been built, and all information is classified.
So, yes, the T-90 is superior, but I think the Zarrar can still put up a good fight.
Anyway, do you know real effective range of T90? I saw some speculations, but I doubt Rheinmetall cannon of Abrams would be too much better.
As far as I know the T-90 is a class below the Abrams. And I also read that the Rheinmetall cannon is slightly better than the Russian. Nothing conclusive however. :) But one should note that the T-90 is just a new name for a fancy T-72 upgrade.
Up to 5km normal and up to 6km with the at rocket. The 2a46 125mm is slightly larger calliber than the abrams 120mm m256 so it packs a bigger punch aswell.
Not sure but I think the rof is faster aswell because of the autoloader.
And don't see how the T90 is anyway "a class below". It's obviously not as much as armored, that's where the superior era bricks come into play though and apart that the T90 is as much tank as the Abrams is and even surpases it in certain ways.
Thanks for setting me straight. :) I did rad however that such comparisons are good only on paper. While the Abrams has actively been proven in combat, the T-90 has not. And also that the T-90 is just a fancy upgrade for the T-72, which was no longer being purchased after it's utter failure in Iraq. While the T-72 was also considered an excellent tank, it didn't prove to be as effective in the field. Correct me if I'm wrong.
It's common knowledge that the Iraqi tank crew's were poorly trained and their tanks were downgraded and hopelessly outdated. Not to mention they had little APFSDS or shaped charged round to counter enemy armors and little ERA to protect themselves. It's rather obvious that the got blown to hell by depleted uranium rounds as those round were designed to take on up-to-date tanks. It's more than ones theoretically proven that a up-dated T-72 can easily take on an Abrams tank.
And T-90 is not a "fancy upgrade" of T-72 it's a vastly improved design and a testament of how effective the T-72 acutally is. And finally who the hell tole you that T-72 is no longer being purchased? The only reasons the "T-72" designated tanks are no longer purchased because they are no longer built! It's variant, the PT-91M "Pendekar" is still sold!
Also you should note that in January 2009, the Iraqi government is secured a deal to purchase up to 2,000 T-72 tanks. The T-72s are to be rebuilt and modernized. And In September 2009 it was announced that Venezuela is planning to purchase 92 Russian T-72 tanks. The first T-72s arrived at Venezuela at the port of Puerto Cabello in May 25, 2011.
Right. Thanks for the reality check. :)
