To give the community an insight into the work that goes into development of Indie projects, I (Squiggers) decided to contact several indie developers for a series of podcasts covering several aspects of Indie Development.

At present, the current plan is to do podcasts covering the following subjects (But not necessarily in this order) :

  • Team Organisation & Recruitment
  • Finance, Loans, Grants, and setting up as a business.
  • Interaction with the community and PR.

If the community has any suggestions of areas they'd like us to cover, then please say so.

I'd like to look at doing podcasts after the initial series, that would focus on individual projects in much the same way that the Dev Banter podcast does (Not meaning to intrude on the great work that you do there guys, its a good laugh to listen to.), but that depends on what other guys in the line up so far, and those who join want to do really.

Each podcast, depending on the subject, would likely range from 20-60 minutes. Due to the number of people now involved, we're likely going to have perhaps 4-5 people dicussing a particular subject per podcast, primarily as some of us may not know about distribution, or interviews with news sites etc.

At present, the following people have agreed to be part of the podcast, provided there are no complications at their end:

  • Thom Maggs (Elementary School Warfare - Moddb.com )

I'm also attempting to contact other indie developers for the podcast series so if you have any suggestions of groups that you'd like to see as a guest, or if you yourself would like to participate, please say so.

Ideally, we'd be looking at getting the first podcast recorded towards the end of June/early July.

We've unfortunately been delayed in starting the podcasts due to heavy workload. We'll hopefully have something after the New Year.

I went searching for the feed and was disappointed to find out you hadn't started casting pods yet. I'll be here day one when you do.

Quick question for curiosities sake Squiggers.

The recent launching of " indieDB " should play to your favor a great deal with respect to the planning of podcasts. Do you intend to utilize this site as more of a " home base " resource for networking information and organizing the podcasts (of course we'd be getting them at ModDB too ) ?

Because for as much as it'd be a great source for raising general community awareness, you can't deny the promotional value alone either. It's a win-win man !

Ideally, yeah - we're still discussing exactly what we're doing in regards to distribution, but a main area would be IndieDB/ModDB for it.

We'd also love to get the Desura team in on the act as well, as they did offer after all. :P

This is a truly great idea Squiggers. These casts should be very informative for all of us with an interest in the current Indie scene and the talented teams producing them.

Personally, I believe a discussion on the dynamics of the crucial role of team management and the complexities involved in doing so successfully, while maintaining a focus on team structure and individual responsibilities, tight timetables, quality productivity and while still maintaining a positive working atmosphere for the entire team.

Put simply, how important an individual the team manager and their duties are and what type of personal skills they need/use to keep production on track and keep everyone as motivated and happy as possible with the " big picture " in mind.
