Depends on wether you believe the past can in fact be changed as you want it to change. If you can change the past then there is hope. If you can't better try to change the future by using the present. It is still better to study for 5 minutes than spend 5 days trying to get a teacher to raise a grade :P

Still the amount of work to invent a time machine and the time lost getting into the past to study like it should have done in the first time is a waste compared to studying the first time. The irony would be if you changed the past so your past version studied but then the test got different because of those chain effect events caused by your change of the regular time events and you still would have failed because you were making a wrong assumption.

If he manages to create a time machine, he doesn't need school. He would just have to stop working on the time machine, it would only be a waste of time, and work on other technological advancements.

But of course, this is a hypothetical scenario, a person that was not intelligent enough to study the first time would not be capable of this.
