it's actually okay to do this. You just need to remove the battery and make sure it is then of course turned off. Then after you cleaned it with water (not put into water because water pressure could really damage something) you can lay it off for dry on a heater for a few days. Then it is good to go again. Almost all parts in a digital camera are mechanical driven anyways and actually you can clean all electric objects with water. You are just NOT allowed to turn it back on/put batteries inside, when it is not dried.
But it's very hard to get water out of camera. Sometimes few days are not enough and you also risk condensation on lens. Once my friend didn't close waterproof case properly before scuba-diving and then he had to dismantle the whole camera to dry it. Don't try to clean any electrical appliance with water if you don't have to!
