Yes, modern video games are all graphics, I'd rather play a well made 2D game than the stuff we pay for now, its all hype and merchandising, but in the end the games are either short, confusing or too open-ended so there is room for sequels, its disturbing how easy they are too, I buy one FPS and finish its story the same day.
I actually miss old shooters more for the insane sprinting speeds - Just play Quake, Half Life, Jedi Knight, and zip around the map like a cheetah while blowing everything to hell and back :D
Why not an open-world shooter?
Not like Doom, that's full of nearly impossible puzzles. I mean, ARMA 2, but less realistic. Loads of ways to flank.
Don't know what else to say. I'll end it here.
STALKER is an excellent FPS in my opinion, sure it's not open world but you're able to explore a large ammount of maps freely, probably the only problem I have with the series is that they are really buggy, but I only found a game-breaking bug once.
What game is the first map from?
I don't recognize it!
3 TRIES
Well Doom always had an extremely confusing map desing in my opinion, so I guess that map is from Doom.
Edit: yep it's from Doom :P

This is proof that devolution is real.

is the 2010 one based off of space marine? ;)
I wish this wasn't true. I miss old school shooters for this very reason.

Far Cry?
Far Cry 3 was quite alright in my opinion, in fact one of the few modern shooters I enjoyed.
But like most others I miss those insane sprinting speeds, rocket jumps and insane map designs from ye old days we need more shooters like that again.

To the right is Medal of Honor, Call of Duty, Battlefield.
