Greece is claiming heritage to Eastern Roman Empire (more commonly known as Byzantine empire, thanks to some German renaissance writer). personally I'd say Turkey and Russia have more claim on being Rome than Greece has though.
The tzars of Moscow claimed succession of Rome, based on marriage with the ERE imperial family and being the biggest orthodox power around (one Russian monk even wrote "2 Romes have fallen, the third one stands and fourth one shall not come")
Actually, not that it was any special. Serbian emperors also claimed to be successors of Rome.
Bu-bu-but Romans are Italians. Did an American make this or am I missing the joke?

Italy is as much Rome as France is Gaul.
Byzantine Empire was basically a mix of Ancient Greek/Macedonian and Roman cultures, what does Russia have to do with Rome???

Almost all emperors did. Autrian, German,... Rome was an example of large empire.
The Holy Roman emperors claimed heritage to WRE, while Orthodox emperors did to ERE.
