The FreeSpace Campaign Restoration Project is a community project of the FreeSpace community, just like the Source Code Project (focused on working to the FreeSpace Open engine). Compared to the SCP, the FSCRP is very recent and has a limited workforce. Despite this, the team works hard on making old and outdated campaigns playable again.
The FSCRP Team's leader, Admiral Nelson, worked on several campaign upgrades well before the FSCRP got started. His experience effectively boosts the results of the whole FSCRP Team's work.
The upgrades are not supposed to replace the old versions for several reasons. First of all, the FSCRP makes campaigns compatible with FreeSpace Open and also makes use of several FSO features, meaning that the upgraded campaigns will no longer be compatible with the Retail version of FreeSpace 2. Additionally, the Team doesn't want to effectively replace the work of the original campaign creators as an act of respect.
For additional info regarding the upgrades made by FSCRP Team, take a look at the Upgrading campaigns article on the FreeSpace Wiki.
