It is amazing and an honor for us, that big Youtubers and Streamers like pewdiepie, manvsgame and others use our sites to discover and unearth innovative indie games and mods. Five Nights at Freddys, Gangbeasts and Double Action: Boogaloo are a few games and mods that have exploded in popularity to give an example.
Helping all games and mods on the site big or small find their audience is what motivates us to continually improve - which is why we let anyone share news, downloads and media with the community. We don't want to be just another editor controlled destination where you hope a writer covers your press release, there are plenty of them!
One area which drives a lot of discovery is the top charts as it is easy to browse. The problem however, is that top charts are typically static with the same content always at the top. To combat this, we just changed a lot of variables controlling the algorithm, which means most games and mods are just one great news post, update, or link away from showing up in the charts. We hope this helps power discovery and encourage you to keep sharing content and linking to your profile on the site when you post news, downloads or media, and seeing your rank rapidly climb as a result.
We also deployed a fix to the comment system so discussion threads no longer wrap across pages and are super confusing. We know people want comment notifications - rest assured it is coming as we know how important comments are.
Next up we have a redesign coming, embedable game support, fixing the text editor all in the pipeline and welcome all suggestions.
Awesome! Another thing off the list :)
At last the comments system gets fixed! Thank you so much for that.
However I would sort of rather have a static top 100 as I don't check it really often. Maybe add the option for top 100 today as well as top 100 of all time?
Also it would be nice to track games and be informed when a new mod for it is started in a separate update section than the new media or news get placed in. For example it would be nice to track Skyrim and be able to chose whether it displays any new mods for it along side any new media that gets added to it or whether they should be separate.
Going off of that it would be nice to "favorite" some games/projects since there are some mods/games that I don't want to miss when I'm in a hurry and cannot read through all of the latest updates. So it would be nice to have a separate favorites section at the top of the updates section with the same subcategories as the rest of the updates.
Finally the last improvement I can think of would be to have karma show up like it did in the old youtube comments. Where it showed the net positive and negative karma as just a single number but when you moused over it, you could see the break down of the numbers. So say a comment had 5 overall likes, mousing over it would reveal that it had 2 dislikes and 7 likes.
Anyways keep up the great work guys!
Really interesting ;)
Make sure to share your ideas on our dedicated topic, where members can share their suggestions: Moddb.com
You can check mods you track here rather than looking at all the updates.

This list is a pretty static top 100.

This is great, I'm looking forward to the end result once everything's done..
Change is Good :3

So theoretically, a mod with a lot of comments can rise steadily at the top? Is that part of the algorithm? I'd like to learn more about this because I see some mods with lots of spam hovering close or at the top position.
Comments don't factor in, its visitors and where they come from. So traffic from your game / mods homepage, twitter, youtube, google etc is highly rated for example
This is pretty important to note, its a common question for devs as they want the best chance of hitting the daily top 100.
Sounds great - comment notifications would be a big help :)
It is so hard to keep track of all the updates to moddb itself. Will the ability to remove a certain update from a mod that is listed in the updates page be made available so I can keep a link to one update for the mod but remove the other updates for that specific mod\game?
I know it most likely has been asked before but lately I haven't had much time to come here... :(
Thanks
