Because it makes them believe in a "better" life after death.

Also, it makes them believe that people are de facto "good" and evil is just an "offspring" of good and all "evil" people are evil aganist thier own will.

Chirstianity's Ten Commandments list of morale imperatives was thought to bring widespeard "peace" and respect for any human being in a world which was (and still is) devoid of any ethics even before Chirstianity started.

In a world with people such as our selfs,(not to be smug about it but its true) religion has no place. If we can comprehend basic human morality and be good people without a deity who just judges you your whole life and has a story book which is its self full of immorality. The fact is, we are products of social evolution. We didn't evolve to suit the environment but rather to be just better people in general or if anything at least more rational and intelligent.
