Indeed, sorry I should clarify, it was produced with the British Merlin engine, (same as the Spittie). The whole plane was in response to a specification issued directly to NAA by the British Purchasing Commission.
It was perfect for the USAAF because of its escort capabilities.

The British operated the P-51 under lend-lease but as far as i know never produced them?
I mean you just need to look at the name of the company that produced it to know it wasn't a British plane.
