(buried)

Believing what? Believing in the F-22? Until Russia gets the PAK FA operational, I'm gonna continue to say that the F-22 is the best stealth fighter in operational service.

Yes I did.
I think you doubt the arrogance of an American pilot. Your average American pilot signed up just because they saw "Top Gun" and fly because they want to do exactly what Maverick did (Trust me, I have three friends who joined for that specific reason).
Not saying this happened, but if you put an American in the most capable stealth aircraft in operational service, odds are somebody is going to try something like this. Now if a guy did this is he losing his wings? Most likely.
Of course the piece is sensationalist, as all aviation "combat" pieces tend to be. All I'm saying is that it is possible. Not that it happened exactly as its told, but it is possible.

Look. While the F-22 is indeed hard to detect on radar, there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY a F-22 can get that close without being noticed. And scene like this only happen in movies were enemy pilots are like children who don't even no how to fly a plane and don't have any functioning onbord radar or AEW support. On the contrary, Iran's pilots are top notch as IRIAF is the successor of IIAF, which was literally modeled after USAF. And is backed up by a detection system that cover the entire Persian gulf and then some and proven it is capable of detecting stealth plane. Iran may lack proper SAM cover but their detection net is top of the line. So a event like this happening is simply not possible.

The F-22 is a very Formidable Multi role fighter, and it should be made to be one. Not as an Air Dominance fighter, but also keep in mind the F-22 does have great stand off capability.

As I have stated before..Variants that were proposed for the F-22 should be made. It would be one of the best Multi-role fighters ever made if done so.. because the thing can perform well at all altitudes.

Wild weasel F-22 and the FB-22 Proposed variant and A Strike raptor would have great success. But as an air dominance fighter not so sure since in Al Dhafra the Rafale beat it.

Other cancelled programs should have been considered for Air Dominance but the F-35's budget killed those along with the F-22 Variants.

Hurr durr. Load of bull.
So they're saying that the US casually fly drones just off the coast of Iran for no apparent reason but ISR, what were they reconnoitring? The local dolphin pods? Doubt it.

My version of that story would be more like this: MQ-1 Predator drone flies into Iranian airspace to perform ISR and **** off the Iranians in general. F4 Phantoms are tasked with running intercept and a chase ensues, but seeming as the Predator hasn't actually intruded far into Iran in the first place it just takes a quick turn around and blat out of there to enter back into international airspace. F4 pilots get a little excited and pursue the drone into IA and are in turn greeted by an on station AEW, and warned to go back home or suffer impending doom *rolls eyes*.

Raptors were somewhere within the vicinity. And since this is an entirely unexciting event, lets spice things up and put a Top Gun spin on it shall we? There you go, high-fives all round folks, whataday.

"If the episode went exactly as Welsh described it, it was something more similar to Maverick’s close encouter with Russian Mig-28s in Top Gun movie than a standard interception."

erhm.

>encouter with Russian Mig-28s in
>Russian Mig-28s
>Mig-28

ok.

Actually, while on this sort of topic; Is there such a thing as a non-biased aviation forum??? I have been scouring the net for anything remotely "on the fence" so to speak, and can't find anything. Discussion hardly leaves the USAAF (and all its subsidiaries), and if it does will only touch briefly on Euro aircraft. Anything "threatening" aka RU/Chinese is promptly dismissed as "absurd" or "a rebuild of an older aircraft". Heck, they won't even mention Sukhoi, the company that makes quite possibly the most advanced and formidable planes in the world.
