I am not exactly lover, but F35 has something I like. It's the VTOL ability (talking about that one version). Planes that are currently new may look sexy, but what are the news there? They are not significantly faster than good old MiG21. Main updates are "inteligent" radar and weapons, lower radar reflections. Electronic mini-war - less reflections=>better radar=>less reflections...
But VTOL is something extra, something I would like new jets to follow.
Not worth it if the Engine needs to be Overhauled Due to Fatigue in the Lift Fan's blades every 8-10 misisons.
It Has Stealth.
It's Stealth is almost so Minor it does not matter..Also Can be easily Detected by passive Doppler of the SU-Series, Mig-29, and Rafale.
It's performance at Maximum payload is a Joke.
It has Avionic Issues..Including it's Faulty Navigations and Control Surface Management Systems.
Can Be beat in a Dog Fight By the very Jets it is meant to replace. The F-16 and F-18.
Poor Electronic Shielding in it's Electronics. So Electronic warfare or even Lightning will Fry the plane.
The list goes on..
And most of all..
It costs..
223 million! For a plane with all these features!! Wow what a deal!
So it does nothing better then a Good Ol' Harrier, F/A 18 or F 16 can not already do. Except Cost US Taxpayers more Money and Get Shot Down By SU-35s and Rafales at three or 4 times the cost.
Anyways plus one Karma for your attempt at defending the plane and bringing up some good examples.
To be fair, the F-35 would help modernize friendly U.S nations Air Forces and Navies, there isn't much alternative for most western navies other than the F-35B and the aging Harrier models that most operate, in which case the F-35B would be a cheaper alternative to building newer, more expensive CATOBAR carriers to use cheaper planes like the Rafale or the Super Hornet.
Though I agree that the JSF program so far has been a giant money black hole. The B-Variant still has it's useful points, though I can't really say the same for the A and C variants. Honestly the USAF should just upgrade their F-16Cs to Block 60+ variants and call it a day.
Well I hope I helped cover some of those Bases at least, but I always love to have a civil debate and hear other's opinions as long as it remains..Civil and is based on facts. :D
Sometimes I can be wrong too you know? Or sometimes I even learn things as well :)
I think it is just incredibly sad to see the so called "predecessor" to the Harrier be such a failure. The F-35 has failed in nearly every way at upholding its royal lineage.
Incoming Hate from the F-35 lovers in this group!
*Runs and hides*

Agreed. I'll never understand why the British Government retired the Harrier for the F-35.
In the perfect world..
UK and USA say..ok The F 35 B is to Junky and Expensive.. Boeing, and BAE Update or Design the Harrier 3!
I think all the bases have been covered here. I have nothing to add at this point.
