Can you elaborate why it is considered garbage? I think I read somewhere that one US pilot said we would have rather flown one of these then a Mustang.
Poor reliability, Poor High altitude and mid Altitude Performance. Slow Acceleration. Un reliable Compressor, Poor maneuverability, Prone to Spinning. Prone To Engine Overheating.
Although The Thing Had a great roll rate, and was armed to the teeth and pretty Durable.
The Yak Cannon although Powerful was Incredibly Inaccurate and Unreliable. Also it often caused Fuselage and engine Damage due to the Vibration when it fired.
So..Many P-63 King Cobras......
Well also got to give credit to the Russians too..
Took Two Garbage planes ((P-39 and P-63)) and turned them into legends.
I guess for the Motherland huh?

Bet it was a nightmare for any ground units...
They would strafe once in a while but they were usually used to fly cover For Il-2s, PE-3 and TU-2s
yeah the gun was kinda low velocity, the Yak-9 configs with 37 and 45 mm guns could take out tanks
Keep in mind though..
The Yak Cannon although Powerful was Incredibly Inaccurate and Unreliable. Also it often caused Fuselage and engine Damage due to the Vibration when it fired.
Not only that but its ammo capacity for the 45mm was hopeless, you'd be praying you hit every time you fired the thing.
Yes, the 45 mm cannon could not be fired in bursts for fear of shattering coolant and fuel lines in the engine block.
