Currently the only variable sweep wing aircraft in operation in the USAF, the B-1 lancer is the core of low-level sonic bombing in the USAF, and is expected to be on service into the 2020s
originally conceptualized in 1960s as a supersonic bomber, the B-1 had numerous delays in development, as theory of the strategic balance shifted from high-altitude bombing to low level penetration bombing and back again. its first prototype, the B-1A was developed in 1970, but was cancelled and only four prototypes were built. the project resurfaced again in the 1980s as a low level penetration bomber and entered service in the USAF SAC(strategic air command) as a nuclear bomber. in the 1990s it was converted to conventional bombing purposes and saw action as a conventional bomber in 1998 in operation desert fox.
it is also nicknamed "Bone" (originally from "B-One").
B-1 versus B-2 which one for the win?
Did we all "misunderstand" you, and the question was really: which one is more effective at their task? :P
Just which one you think is better and why.
I don't think any of them have auto cannons for dogfights, or attachments for Air to Air missles, so the only way to take out eachother would be kamikaze. Scince the B-1 is cheaper and both would be destroyed, it would be more cost efficent and "win".
But both could probably be jurry rigged with them. And as the B-2 is stealthy and could probably lock on to the B-1 before the other even seen it I would count on the B-2.
I think they do have some kind of missiles as a payload, maybe drop and activate and it flies of to a target.
But maybe video games made me stupid and this is all a rap.
sry to say but they made you stupid :P
the only missiles they have would be "Air to Ground" ones.
srry to burst ur bubble but yea they can hav air to air, tactic developed where f-22 recons and spots a squad of planes ahead and the b2 unleashes the missles
I like where this is going....
Anyways b-2 ftw!
that may was in development but it is no way used anywhere in the airforce wether on the B-52 nor the B-1 ...sry to burst ur bubble.
Also I am no expert but iirc they would need diffrent targeting systems installed and a proper radar to get BVR capabilitys otherwise that would be nonsense
Of course, but if Raptor is a target designator, then those are guided by his targeting systems, or in case of AMRAAAM, or Phonenix missiles, they have own radar which made them self-sufficient...
I heard something similar about Gripen in swedish version. Two are flying, one about 20 km behind the first. First has his radar turned off, but there is the link between them. Enemy can see active radar on second plane, so he think he have enough time (missiles are not on range), but then suddenly first plane release the load, which is on the range, but the plane was invisible for radar detectors.
Still, I consider B2 to be another class. In this case the emphasis was on stealth ability. In case of B1 - just a strategic bomber with ability to fly fast, but don't need long runway - wing geometry.
Thank you Commander.
B-2 may be good, but think of maneuverability. the B-2 is a flying wing and DOES NOT have tail wings and rudders, so it would be very hard to make relatively sharp turns with the B-2 whereas the b-1 would be pretty capable of making fast sharp turns and would be able to outmaneuver the b-2 in a dog fight.
the B-2 has so much lift due to its design that it's a bitch to land, I don't think it handles as a flying cow at all. He probably only have to tilt a bit and then the lift will make him turn quickly enough.
but then again, making another fast turn would be hard. really hard. and these things aren't even made to dog fight :p
true
with that bird design
wow is a ty-160
