Zombie Grinder is the debut game of TwinDrills, an indie game development duo made up of Tim 'Infini' Leonard and Jordan 'Jordizzle' Chewning. It's a multi-platform (windows, mac, Linux!) (also Free!) cooperative multiplayer arcade game, reminiscent in style and gameplay of retro games like 'Zombies Ate My Neighbors' and 'Super Smash TV!', but with the added benefit of some newer game mechanics - achievements, ranking, player-customization, rpg style stats and so forth. The game sports a variety of different game modes, from co-operative 'campaign' style levels, to wave maps and even the classic 'pvp' style game modes - deathmatch, capture the 'bag' and so forth. All of these mods are bristling with a variety of weapons and items, all lovingly displayed in Jordan's classic quirky pixel-art style.

Brace your selves for a wall of text XD

1. One time use weapon:

So, i got to thinking, what would be a great one time use item, but would also be absent from the shop? a one time use item called the Rainbow Barf comes to mind.
this will make perfect sense to those familiar with MSPA's 7000+ page Homestuck comic, but for those that don't, this page in the comic is my inspiration Mspaintadventures.com

onto the details:

Name: Rainbow Barf

obtained through: rare zombie drop (as rare as gems)
time till disappearance: none, lasts as long as gems on the ground
activated: instantly upon pickup, does not override any weapons.
Effect: the server removes all decals, blood, and disables shadowing. the weapons effect is much like the lasers, however MASSIVE in size, covering the entire screen, and has a rainbow colored appearance, just like this moment in the linked flash
:
during charge-up, the player is invulnerable, and when the laser is fired it covers the entire screen. during the animation all zombies on the server are killed, so there does not need to be any hit detection. temporarily removing blood decals and and shading should reduce the lag (although the weapon should force some lag by slowing down time, for dramatic effect of course). Once the animation and attack are over, all dead zombies are left as pile's of ash.
furthermore, once the complete annihilation of the undead is complete, a message baring "Player-Name Has BARFED RAINBOWS" (in multicolored text) is put up in the IRC, much like the leveling up achievement.

Drop Icon: (mspa readers will understand the significance of this icon. for those that don't get it, the Green Sun is arguably the power source for this guy, which barfed up rainbows in the flash in the link provided. alternatively, it could be the one of the eyes of the monster, , which would make more sense to more people.

Other Notes: although the item is not purchasable through the store, another item called "rainbow happy hour" could be sold at the price of 5 million gold. upon purchase, the item is automatically consumed, and every game server goes into happy hour mode, which basically changes the drop rates. all normal drops including gems and gold are removed. any other rare drops (like rare weapon drops, see other suggestions) are still enabled. furthermore, xp for all players is cut in half, to avoid abuse. the only common item that is dropped is the rainbow barf (about every 3rd zombie), creating complete hilarity. the rare weapon drop "rainbow barfer" (see next suggestion), has its drop rate tripled, allowing more players to nab the special edition laser weapon. rainbow happy hour literally lasts for a single hour, during this time the leader board should not be updated (I'm not sure how leaderboards work, but make it so that happy hour waves aren't counted).

2.Rare weapon drops

pretty straight forward, have zombies sometimes drop a permanent weapon upon death (preferably rarer than gem drops), that's sent to the player inventory. these weapons cannot be purchased in the shop, but are tradeable, and have slots for ammo and gems, when appropriate. My ideas for some rare weapons for epic weapon drops are below:

2a:
Name: The Rainbow Barfer
Details: this weapon is nearly exactly the same as the current laser rifle given to donators, but has a multicolored laser, higher screen shake upon use, and player movement while in use is slightly faster than the regular laser, nothing else is different.
Notes: rate drop is increased during rainbow happy hour.

this allows non-donators to get permanent and tradeable laser rifles, but its also different, and is juuuust slightly better (and way cooler) than its counterpart, due to its increased rarity.

2b.

Name: Kinetic Cannon
Firing pattern: 180 degree arc, distance unknown (I'm not sure how distance is measured in the game, lets say 4 baseball bat lengths.

effect: applies intense knock-back to all zombies hit, instantly sets-off exploding zombies, does some damage, but not tiny.

ammo: 15 per clip, 60 total (just an arbitrary number really, really up to devs).
slots: gem and ammo. explosive ammo causes zombies to explode once they stop moving, same with ice, incendiary ammo is applied instantly. has 3 slots due to its rarity.

2c.
Name: The Squirt Gun
Effect: when enemies are hit, they get a soaked effect. Soaked zombies move MUCH slower, at half speed. when soaked enemies are frozen, they shatter on any hit (instant kill). soaked enemies receive 20% more damage from any damage source (if that's possible with the engine). Zombies that are soaked, frozen, and then lit on fire (any combination really, just have to be in all states at once), explode in a massive fireball killing any zombies nearby (but doing no damage to players).
damage: when hit they receive 5 damage per hit, but do not receive damage continuously.
Slots: 3 gem slots. cannot combine with ammo.

2d.
Name: Infinitive's Pistol
Effect: normal pistol, read on below ;)
Damage: same as normal pistol
ammo: infinite
penetration: 4 zombies (increased penetration)
Slots: 3 slots, takes ammo (infinite ammo effect)!!
Description: Where'd you get this !?!?
the beauty of this pistol is the slots, it can give a player the ability to have a permanent ammo affect, at the cost of the rate of fire of other higher dps weapons. the increased penetration also make this weapon very desirable.

2e.
Name: Alien Technon Cannon
Effect: acts somewhat like the laser rifle, but the beam targets the nearest enemy (homing laser), does not reach across the map, and has no charge up time. the longer the weapon is active, the larger the beam becomes, and the more damage it does.
Ammo: infinite, based on overheat system, reload to 0 heat is faster than when the weapon is forceably overheated (medium dmg style low cooldown vs high dmg long cooldown).
Slots: 3 slots, can be combined with ammo (extreme caution when exlposive ammo is used, suicide is highly likely, damage is extreme)
range: maximum range is just outside the screen.
description: wait....how are aliens involved?!?!

2f.
Name: The Thunder Gun
Effect: acts similarly to the technon cannon, but is based off of ammo, and uses lightning for its beam. applies an electrifed effect to zombies. when electrified, zombies still target and attack players, but are occasionally zapped with damage, momentarily freezing them in place, they are also 30% slower overall. frozen state when stunned lasts half a second, zapped every 2 seconds. when a zombie is killed a thunderous bang (like in a thunderstorm) is heard, and a pile of ash is left behind, like as in the rainbow barf.
ammo: batteries. 3 times that of laser rifle.
damage: is the same as the average damage of the technon cannon, weaker than laser rifle, has a flat damage output, so is easier to use then technon cannon, but at the cost of using ammo.
Slots: 3 gem slots, cannot be combined with ammo.

2g.

Name: Shamrock Shotty
Effect: Shoots green four leaf clovers at enemies in a shotgun pattern (based off of spaz). enemies that die to the gun, turn into gold statues (with a *Clang*)
Ammo: the players wallet :D, 1 coin per pellet (alt fire does higher damage, 3 coins per pellet, 1.5x damage)
damage/rate of fire: same as spaz, alt fire does same pellets at 1.5x damage (maybe use alt key to change firing mode?).
Slots: 3 slots, can combine with gems and ammo.
description: others fees may apply where applicable.

2h.

Name: Twin Uzis
effect: same as an uzi, but with 2 :D.
Ammo: double, to handle the double rate of fire
damage: same per bullet
slots: 3 slots, can combine with ammo.
description: +90 ratta-tat-tas!

2i.

name: The Ripper
Effect: is basically an M134 minigun, firing a complete hail of bullets at extreme rate of fire, completely suppressing enemies. each bullet applies a small knock to enemies, when the entire swarm of bullets come's into accounts, it can slow down enemies incredibly weel, while clawing them to complete mush
damage: per bullet, is tiny, per second in total, very high.
Ammo: high. atleast 200 rounds a clip, at 1000 rounds total, should still be easy to burn through if player is not careful
Slots: 4 gem slots, cannot combine with ammo.
accuracy: very low, but not extremely low, designed to take on whole crowds, not effiecient at taking down individuals.
Description: Words carved onto the ammo box read "Feed Me"

3. Crafting rare weapons

straight forward, combine any two legit gems for one random rare weapon from the rare drop list. rare weapons created by this method are tradeable and sellable, but are random, so players may not get the rare weapon they like (or they might get an extremely rare hat!! wink wink tf2, see next suggestion).

4. Ultra rare hats!!!

based on the previous suggestion, combining any two legits has a chance to drop ultra rare hats!!! these hats are any of the hats in the store (or not?) and have some special effects. some have fire, sparkles, circling hearts, sparks, glows, even be frozen like a zombie, the possibillities are endless. combining two of the same legit gem increases the chance of ultra rare hat creation. these ultra rare hats also have extra slots for gems :D.

needless to say, these items would become instantly desirable and coveted, and highly valued when trading.

/wall of text. let me know what you guys think :D
