The multi-platform development project, Flutter Bombs, now has a long overdue mobile update available for android devices. The update includes procedurally placed content, new wingset art congruent with the future Xbox One release this fall, new spider models optimized for mobile devices, and a new difficulty formula.
Some development notes:
reducing the spiders from an 80+ bone count down to about 18 bones was an interesting process. the spider mesh was also reduced from 6k polys down to about 1k. IK animation was removed, but in the future will probably be rebuilt.
The UE4 PhAT system was a great to simulate ragdoll physics. While the death animations appear to be physics driven, this is actually a key recording in the PhAT editor and played back as an animation in Persona.
Procedural content has been introduced, but that also meant i had to reevaluate lighting and A.I. navigation as it relates to optimization. Dynamic lighting and navigation wasn't really an option given the draw call count in a twin stick shooter, so most materials are emissive, and spider A.I. is driven by really basic A.I. behavior rather than navmesh logic.
More critter model art on the way toward the end of the month, as well as some new projectile art. Beyond that, will most likely be focusing on the Xbox One release due for this fall with multiplayer base bombing action being a focus for the release.
Cheers, and thanks for reading!
