We first created The Lighthouse almost 3 years ago in January of 2014 as a simple 2d point-and-click thriller game. Because we designed and built it in under 48hrs, we had to keep our vision and scope limited.

Like most developers, we figured we would redo the whole thing one day and give it the time and energy it deserved. We are proud to say that The Lighthouse is being re-imagined and fully rebuilt using Unreal Engine 4.

Our goal is to tell a unique short story through the perspective of the character. To achieve this, we are switching from point-and-click to a First Person persepctive. We will give the player the ability to explore and interact with the world in 3d, and should the player have the equipment, they can become fully immersed using their HMD set of choice ( Oculus Rift, Vive, etc.).

The Story

The game, "The Lighthouse" takes place February 19, 1964. You play as Irvine, a former detective turned private investigator in the state of Maine. Irvine's life is typical for someone who solves problems that the city doesn't have the inclination to follow up on or solve. In doing so, many lucrative cases that would come to his office are from locals, usually fulfilling requests to shadow couples looking to expose infidelity or business owners asking Irvine to gather enough evidence to incriminate a business partner.

February 19th is an important anniversary for Irvine, as it was the day he lost his first born, Lily, to cancer 7 years before. Every year, he would visit her, place a yellow lily and lit candle on her gravestone and watch it burn until it was extinguished. This tradition had never been broken, until today. As Irvine began to pack and leave his office, candle in hand, he noticed a letter slide underneath his door.

The letter was marked "Irvine" and inside it read:

"Mr. Irvine,

My daughter hasn't come home for 2 years, 4 months and 9 days. You see, she's missing. She was involved in the old lighthouse incident, you may remember her name- Lily. I've asked the local authorities to look for her, but they haven't got a clue. They tell me horrible things that no parent should hear. They tell me to accept that she may have died. Worst, they tell me they can't help. I can't sleep until I know where she is, if she's safe, if she's scared, if she's trying to come home but can't find home. Help me find her. Look for her at the Lighthouse, as that was her last known location.

-Elizabeth Beaumont

Inside the envelope was an address and a yellow lily.

We first want to thank all of you Knights for all of the support you have given us. The messages of encouragement and support keep us going especially when things are down, and we mean, really down, and we can't thank you enough for helping us push through.

We cannot stress how important it is for us to make a quality game that is awesome no matter how long it takes! We have been working non-stop on The Lighthouse and this month we have some stretch goal updates, environment updates, tech updates, and other awesome news to share with you!

The Wescott Manor

Inspired by the real life Gabriola Mansion in Vancouver Canada, Clinton Crumpler and Kurt Kupser created the stunning Wescott Manor.

Both Clinton and Kurt from Dekogon Studio have work featured in games like: Gears of War 4, Robo Recall, PlayerUnknown's Battleground. They've finished working on this beautiful piece for The Lighthouse. We’re so thankful we got to work with these two on this, as it’s the focal point of the game.

You can check out some of Clinton and Kurts work on Dekogon.com where they hand build and deliver industry class content for all types of studios.

The Lighthouse Cove

Richard Vinci has re-created our Lighthouse Cove and we absolutely love it. Richard started working with us back in July and has been an amazing addition to the Shadow Knights Team. We believe these updates have really given the environments that extra polish that really blurs the line between Indie and AAA quality. Richard always finds ways to even amaze us!

Technical Upgrades

  • Flashlight upgrade [ Now uses an IES profile so it looks more like a flashlight from the 50s-60s ]
  • Flashlight now bounces light off of Fog.
  • All new high quality original models in the Cove now support up to 4K resolution. Most placeholder assets are almost fully replaced with our own custom models.
  • Subsurface scattering now supported on foliage. Light now bleeds through grass and leaves just like in real life.
  • Volumetric Fog enabled. Lights now more naturally scatter when going through fog.
  • Musical beat syncing. Music now syncs with certain game objects (like the lighthouse sweep).
  • The moon and stars in the cove are the actual position they would have been in the sky that date, latitude & longitude, and time of day. It's probably not going to be noticed by most players but it's part of our commitment to building an authentic story and world.

This next photo gives a pretty good idea at the new rendering systems from 4.18 working together. Volumetric Fog, Light Scattering, Volumetric Lighting( God Rays ), Subsurface Scattering on foliage ( gives leaves and grass that see-through light glow), etc. The Settings Menu still allows you to enable or disable certain features so you can still run The Lighthouse smoothly on as many computers as possible. For those of you that can run 4k content- be prepared because this game has a lot of rendering features that will really test your rig.

As you can tell, the success of our Crowdfunding Campaign and the backings of our Knights have elevated The Lighthouse game. You can see how crowdfunding really helps indie developers realize their initial visions. We hope you appreciate the near 1:1 representation from artwork to realtime render. The stretch goals were supposed to be great additions to the main game and you can get a sense of the feelings that we are trying to evoke by watching the work-in-progress video:

GDC 2018!!!

We're very excited to announce that The Shadow Knights Team will be at GDC this year, but not only that, we will have a booth for The Lighthouse! If you will be attending GDC please stop by and say hi :D

Mimi Page Interview

Mimi recently did an interview with Electronic Colorado check it out!

Check out our discord for more frequent updates. We always like to drop in pics/clips of things we’re working on. It's also the best way currently to reach us as we all have the app on our phones/computers and check it frequently. Discordapp.com

We want to thank everyone again for the amazing support. As we continue to get closer to getting the game finished, we will probably seem a bit more radio silent but that's only because we will be completely involved in finishing up gameplay for the 2 game extending stretch goals as well as the main game. There are still a lot of things to streamline and structure and we do have a few more major assets that we are waiting on before we officially hit Beta. Thanks everyone!

Devs, I love games like this. A perfect mix of horror and puzzle. I know this is only a demo and may not be representative of the final game but from what I've played in this demo I'm hooked. Absolutely brilliant. Graphics are amazing, how the puzzle elements fall into place gel really well, but the sounds, music and overall ambiance is thrilling. I can't wait for the full game to be released. I've done a playthrough of the demo (as of July 26th 2017) which I hope you like.

Due to all the asset flipper devs and how Steam's image has taken a beating more than Mike Tyson could ever wish to deal out, I hope you get the attention you deserve to make it noticed on your digital publishing platform of choice.
