when it rains or when you pour a bucket of water over dirt you turn the dirt into mud the next step is to create compost from junk you find which then will allow you to plant seeds you need to keep pouring water over compost otherwise it will turn back into dirt
The darker color dirt is mud if the water disappears the mud will slowly turn to dirt, its also snowing in this screenshot so water will slowly turn to ice.
