First Release, no gameplay just a basic wander about and a look at some of what has been added so far. A lot is hidden but will be added once more tests...
More is ready to be released and is just down to time.
This is not a DEMO and is a good few months away from beng a playable survival game.
Hi Fellow Open World Fans,
First of all a massive thank you to all those who contacted me with your opinions and feedback on the first Development Release of NO RETURN (V1.12 - Jan 17th) Once again I appologise for it not being ready for you due to unfortunate events at the start of December. Those events have required me to spend considerable time away from the projects development, websites, marketing, funding etc.
Keep in mind even at full speed it is a lot of work for us to achieve. The programmer who is working on the weapon aiming system assures me it will be "Golden" when he is finished with it. That means no hud, environment variables or supplies just yet. I will however try and get the plane in and populate out some more animals and correct a few bugs in the next release.
Over 2500 downloads in 6 weeks.
Wow. Not in a million years did I expect it to get so many and so soon. With no marketing budget or game budget I think it has done well and should be grounds for development to continue. A BIG Thank You to all those who helped get the word out about it and provided feedback along the way, it has been needed and welcomed.
Due to the number of downloads I hope the quality of the first release doesnt hamper the games future growth and that you all got a rough Idea of the concept and vision. It is along way from how I want it, but by the summer I hope it is playing as a suvival and hunting game.
Because it is a development build and not a demo all those waiting for a demo day email will need to wait until the demo is ready. The demo will be a lot more complete and so dont download unless you are an open world fan wanting a first look at the concept and development done so far.
Whats New in the Next Release?
Thats a difficult question to answer, but a few improvments to the AK47 and character will be included. Ive been searching the net for solutions to the compiling problem which prevents the seasons from working and hope a solution is found soon. Why it fails to work when compiled is a concern but I am sure the programmer will give some input when he gets chance. The main priority is the weapons as you would expect for a hunting and survival game. A lot of testing has been done recently with multiplayer and some delays can be expected. The multiplayer might come out sooner than expected, the sooner the better really as it will need tested, tested, and then more. The sun works a lot better now that its coded so you wont get strange out of sync bugs anymore.
An additional 60-sq-km will be completed to the level you see in the central area. Folk's who have downloaded and had a wander about will notice it goes from very full to rather barren and this is just down to me getting chance to finish off the entire map. Given its so large an area and just myself doing it there will be some delays but expect each release to slowly fill out the entire map. After that more detail will be added, fences and that type of thing. Buildings will remain as they are for a while until I get the towns laid out and checked. So basically it will be developed as follows.
* Complete map to level in central area
* Add the wilderness towns, sawmills, militray bases, hunting lodges etc.
* Populate out animals (currently all clumped in centre for testing, doesnt help fps)
* Add fences, dams, road signs, farm props, more detail.
* make all buildings enterable.
* once thats all done underground enterances will be made.
* Underground will be tested as and when I get chance. Some testing done already.
* Last but not least 40 sq-km of urban areas to the west and south.
Everything has been tested and is now down to getting it done.
Models and Textures
Im not very concerned about model or texture quality as the game is still needing a lot added before any attention goes toward the asthetics of it all. It looks a lot better than I had imagined it would given its low poly design but I think it has a charm of its own and I think if it plays well the graphics are academic really. If it gets funding all of the models can be improved and are really only there for testing, I wouldnt say any of the models used are final yet (expect the stag). With a professional 3d artist invloved it could turn out very well given time. The sky can have a lot more done to it but again it isnt a priority at this stage and is easy enough to do. The rotation of the stars and getting the sun rising and falling with the seasons is also something which will appear soon.
In the next release dont expect to see so many stags about, these will be spead out more so you will need to go hunting. I'll try and get the female deer following the stags about to give you an idea of the herd system which has been tested to some degree. I'll fix the birds and make sure they move around more. In a few months the landscape will start to really come to life.
Due to the season bug Im reluctant to spend much time on the weather but some weather fronts will be enabled so you can see the changes it brings to the game. It really does make a difference, even just the sound of rain makes it more emmersive. The effect could be better but like everything in the game its really all about getting everything working before we worry about quality. I hope to have it playable and to a good prototype stage by the summer. Once its all in and working we can start to imporve areas and add the extra features, weapons, classes etc.
New Team Members Welcome
After the 12th March my main priority is the development site, getting this up will mean the game has a development home for all the Fans to let rip about what they want and get invloved in the development. With just myelf and a part time programmer its a lot of work and obviously the more people involved the better.
The game has always been about creating an open world survival game for the community to enjoy and many people enjoy 3d modeling and scripting so if you are intersted drop me an e-mail at scotland3d(@)gmail.com and I will give you access to the develoment site when it opens up.
My wish list would be for someone to help the programmer as he has a lot of projects on the go and splitting the work could advance the game dramtically in time. Keep in mind he will remain the head programmer and so you would need to contribute under his guidance but I am sure you would learn a lot from him. If the game does well on kickstarter it could be a good opportunity for those interested in survival and hunting game development.
Once the dev site is up some scripts for the game will be made available so that anyone interested in editing some of the code can do. Models will also be made available so that if anyone fances editing or creaing new models can. I'm a firm believer in allowing fans to contribute as everyone has talents and with so much to do it would help the project advance faster. So if you have 3d skills, music, ideas, concepts, artwork or anything you think could be used let me know. The dev site will be the main place to get your voice and opinion heard.
What about Kickstarter?
That all went tits up in December and has seriously set the project back, we missed the busy Christmas period and so the project still has no funding. This is a concern as I knew that after xmas it would start to run out of steam as its already taken a lot of time and sacrifices to get it this far. I'd hope to get a kickstarter up in April if all goes well and hope you all join the develoment site so that the kickstarter packages can be made as good as possible for those wanting to help the game survive.
Next Release date
I'd hope a new release will be available this month March 2014. It will offer a few improvments but will really be the way I had intended to release it originaly, more optomised and with more to do. I still wouldnt expect a survival expereince as that will take some time given the season bugs that have appeared after compiling. One thing you can expect to see in the next release is the plane, new sun, character imporvments, AK47 update and needing to crash land. The plane is fun and with mean you can fly round and get a better feel for the whole map.
I should be back on the project full time after the 12th of March and so expect a lot more to be happening after then.
If the Dev Build fails to run try Binaries/UE3Redist.exe First.
If it fails to run wait for the next release which will be more optomised as this release was rushed out and is running well over spec. If you have a 512MB graphics card or lower expect fps issues in the Dev Build V1.12, it should be better in the next release.
Not had much which is a big dissapontment as without it we are left blind as to what you like and dont. As I say Im not bothered if you slate it or love it and feedback of any kind is welcome and will be taken on board. Having developed it by myelf for many years getting feedback now is critical to make sure its what open world hunting and survival fans wants. But keep in mind it isnt a complete vision yet and is a dev build so keep some faith that I do have a plan, even if it doesnt seem like it just now. ;)
any donations will go towards other animal models, to do them myself would take way to long and they can be bought at very reasonable prices. Donate to Scotland3d(@)gmail.com via paypal and we can add some bears, wolves and ducks etc. A few hundred dollars would get a few more added.
Expect a new release this month if all goes well. Keep the faith and the dev site will be opened this month. Dont expect too much from it as the project still has no funding so it will be a free Google site for the time being.
If you have any questions lets me know. Cheers for now.

Dont expect a new release soon as not getting any time to work on it at the moment due to legal nonsense. Doing my best when I get time.
