NO RETURN V1.13 What In and Whats not?
Sadly animals are still not included, except the stag which you can spawn in when you want. Animals are proving a pain but in two weeks V1.135 should be out and that will include the birds, fish, rabbits etc. What should have been a simple spawning system is proving to be far more complicated than I thought, and with needing to re-install everything I haven't had time to get it ready for V1.13.
V1.13 gives you a chance to use the stick-bow which is the main thing. Player variables, HUD, seasonal changes etc are also included to a basic degree. Keep in mind it is a dev build and is not setup as a game yet. We are still at an early stage of development. Its provided for those interested in development, that is all.
Press (F11) for full screen.
Alt+Tab To Exit.
Frame Rate locked at 60fps.
First of all when loaded press (F) (Torch on/off) this will switch your torch off. It does have a battery so dont use it all the time. During the day it will cause a shadow in front of you so best to switch it off during the day.
Press either (G) for the Ak47 or (B) for the Stick-Bow. Once selected that's it. You cant switch weapons in game as I haven't coded that yet. If you want to try and different weapon close it and reload.
Press NumPad (6) to select the type of fog you want. This is the last thing I need to add to the seasonal code, once coded you wont get a choice and will need to hunt in whatever weather conditions randomly appear.
Press (Q) to bring up the HUD. Down the bottom you will see "Menu Location" keep pressing (V) until it reaches 9 and you will remove fugitives from the game and spawn in a stag. Do it again if you want to spawn in another stag. You will soon get the idea. Hang around after killing a stag to get a meat reward, floating above ground.
Head to water and get a drink otherwise you will start to lose health.
Go up to a tree, dead or pine trees work, better looking trees haven't been coded yet. Wait a few seconds and collect some logs.
Press V until you reach 7 on the Menu and wait. If a fire doesn't appear and you do have logs try again. A fire will appear. Don't walk into the fire or you will put it out. Press (B) to move your base to your current location. Run through the base to add logs to your base log count. Once your base log count runs out the fire will go out. You can build fires where you want.
Go and try and find some food, either kill a stag and wait for meat to appear or find mushrooms or berries to eat. Very basic colors so you should see them easy enough.
If you don't want to keep returning to your base to drop off logs Press (V) number 8 and a base supply will be build. You Can then drop logs and rocks off there saving you a possible long trek back to base. No other building options have been added yet. This download is just to show progress and get some feedback before it all get finalized.
If you reach it to day two then the seasons will change and winter will arrive. This will change back and forth a few times before settling on a summer season. This is not how the game will play when done and is just testing. Obviously a lot can still be improved. In time you will get four seasons with berries, mushrooms etc appearing in the correct season.
Snow particles were working but for some reason it hasn't compiled into V1.13. So that will be in V1.135 in a few weeks.
I hope you work out the controls easy enough and sorry it isn't more user friendly at the moment. Ill sort it all out at a later date, for now Im still putting basic code together so don't have time for luxury's like user friendliness or setting it up as a proper game.
Once you select (9) for spawning stags then fugitives will go off. So if you want fugitives attacking all the time then don't spawn any stags. Ill sort out the two game types for V1.135 as a lot got lost when I needed to re-install.
V1.135 will be out in a few weeks and will include the spawning system for the animals. Until then get some practice with the stick bow as stags are easy to hit, small game like birds and rabbits will be a lot harder. Keep in mind you will need to make arrows in later builds, so the better you get the more chance of getting a meal.
If you have any questions let me know and ill be happy to answer it for you, ill usually answer within a week.
If the bug is obvious then I know about it, such as floating grass or trees etc. if you come across anything strange F9 to take a screenshot.
Ill update this post with more info on V1.13 and V1.135 when I get time. For now I hope you like development progress and like me cant wait for the animals to be added in full. Fingers crossed my 5th attempt at a spawning system actually works out.
For those who played V1.125 there are some changes to know about, all of which can be found below.
Q = Hud on/off
F= Torch on/off
G = Select AK47 at game start
B = Select Stick-bow at Game Start
B = Move Base to Player location
V = Change Menu Location Number
Menu Number 7 = Spawn a fire (requires player has 1x logs on them, not at base)
Menu Number 8 = Build a Supply Base, can be used to drop off logs and rocks
Menu Number 9 = Switch Fugitives off and spawn in a stag
Menu Number 10 = Doesn't work, did turn fugitives back on.
F9 = Screenshot (appears in screenshot folder of game)
F4 = Freeze/Unfreeze Game (can cause considerable fps loss)
Num Pad 4 & 7 = Change grass colour between brown or green (used for season tests)
Num Pad 5 = Change Camera (nothing final so let me know your opinions)
Numb Pad 6 = Change Fog (nothing final but will be moved to code soon)
If you want to help the developer find out the minimum specs for this game please do the following and let him know your specification and the frame rate the game runs at.
Press TAB and type "stat fps"
The above will then display some basic frame rate information. Please then post your specification and frame rate in the NO RETURN FORUM at IndieDB. The developer only has one machine so is unable to test on other PC specifications. Your help is appreciated and I'm sure welcomed by other PC users.
Building is going to be an important part of any survival attempt and thankfully Ive managed to find some code which should edit very nicely for the game. Below you can see my very early attempts at using the code to build a dam/bridge, call it what you will (A mess probably). Anyhow the code works and doesn't kill the frame rate that much, so I'm optimistic that the code can be edited for game use when tested more.
Obviously big gray blocks in the middle of the wilderness don't look too natural or fitting for the game at the moment but I'm sure ill be able to make a few skins so that the player can create log walls, stone bridges etc, whatever else springs to mind. This is not mine-craft so building will be limited to a set number of blocks, how many I don't know yet. The main thing is that its a starting place and that's the main thing. V1.135 with come with this feature for you, it will be out in a few weeks.
Or I might just get it available sooner so you can all have a play about with it. Time will tell.
